Watched Paradise for the first time the other day. I Have one question, what the hell was that Box she made everyone go into? Was it simply a 'box' if so why did everyone come out looking like they were just about dead lol.

The whole idea is you stew inside a very hot metal box. Didn't they do that to Obi Wan* in Bridge on the River Kwai?

Imagine being stuck in a metal box heating up in the midday sun for several hours.... I can't believe I could stand it.
People would get awful muscle cramps and dehidrate like hell (literally). Plus that Alixus (or however the name's spelled) witch refused to give Sisko water unless he met her terms.
The other bloke who had to go into the box for stealing a candle came out with a severe case of Stockholm syndrom- torture has this effect on people: they feel admiration and gratitude toward the person who has the power to end the pain. Worked that way for the inquisitors.
It pays off dating a psychologist....

Ahh i see, lol, well when i was watching it i just felt it was a little bit exaggerated, but still, great episode IMO.
This ep for me is kind of like TNG's The First Duty. Its an ep most have little or no problem with, whereas I've gone from having huge problems with it to having just a hardcore few which won't go away.
In this case, Stockholm or no, I don't like the figurative victory of Alixus, especially as compounded by the decision of all to just stay there. Joseph was wrong--they hadn't invested their time and effort and the lives of their loved ones--these things had been stolen from them and invested in their names, with no choice offered. Just a simple line from him chastising her, somehow breaking her serenity, would have been enough. Even just the sight of them beginning to smash the box would have helped. The needless deaths of loved ones combined with the knowledge of her scam should have provoked at least a 'Be glad they're here to arrest you.'

I think the writers didn't want to give us a clear black and white thing on everything in the episode. They clearly made out Alixus' actiosn to have been in the wrong(and they were) but they didn't want the "technology is bad for society" thing to just be shot down as well, so they decided to leave it ambigious enough so we'd decide for ourselves in the end.
It called a "Hot Box" and it's used as a form of punishment/torture.
The box becomes very hot(similar to an oven) in the heat and the person inside is meant to roast and suffer for a couple of days. The subject is also deprived of food and water. It's a form of solitary confinement but is also considered cruel & unusual punishmen.
A different type of this punishment is shown in the Steve McQueen film: "Papillion", in which they put him into solitary confinement and deprive him of food and light.
