PACIFIC 201 - A Star Trek Film

Some fun new stuff - a Romulan design! What might they be up to?

Work has officially started on the Pacific 201 sets!

This is the first of eight bridge consoles. It still requires paint and a lot of detail doo-dads, but the basic structure is complete.

Enough with that school stuff--let the really important work begin! ;)

Eight of those? This looks to be a fairly large-scale production... looking forward to seeing the project unfold further...

Eight required to create our octagonal bridge set, which will definitely be the largest, most complicated physical aspect of our production. But the set is going to be entirely modular, so we can create a number of sets from the same components. We want the illusion of "big" without having to go huge like some other fan productions of late. We still want to be able to produce this on a feasible budget, after all!

After a vacation and some life-stuff getting in the way... here's some new progress on the console! It's not 100% done, really. Detail-wise, it's still quite sparse, so sit tight for the 100% complete version.

Wait wait--Pacific 201 IS your real life, didn't you know that??

Cool space-age vacuum cleaners too!

(Just kidding, looks good and glad you're back at it! I hear Paramount are taking pitches now...)

Those of you who've been following us on Facebook would have already seen this, but this is a fairly recent render of the Pacific I whipped up as we gear up for our Kickstarter in the next few weeks here.

On the Facebook page is a picture of a crewmembers in action, with caps and headsets, which just looks amazing. It feels very grounded and engaging and looks interesting.

I'm definitely a little behind posting here. Mostly because I've been working on our Kickstarter campaign (which just launched today!)

Some new pictures, too:
The Pacific speeds towards an interesting anomaly!

And... a new look at the Romulan KR-11 "Shadow Kestrel"

(The war was costly for Earth in many ways, and set humanity back quite a bit)

How did this war do that, as this was basically a space-based conflict?

It was fought in space, but no war - no matter how distant the battlefield - is detached from its people. Earth ships and Earth colonies were totally wiped out of existence by the Romulans, severely limiting humanity's means and authority in space. Countless numbers of humans fought and died on the front lines, and in order to produce dozens of battle-capable ships in a short time, a massive strain was put on resources and manpower back home.

The Romulan wars did reach Earth (or at least the Sol system), per this line of dialogue from DS9:

From Homefront:

SISKO: Sir, the thought of filling the streets with armed troops is as disturbing to me as it is to you, but not as disturbing as the thought of a Jem'Hadar army landing on Earth without opposition. The Jem'Hadar are the most brutal and efficient soldiers I've ever encountered. They don't care about the conventions of war or protecting civilians. They will not limit themselves to military targets. They'll be waging the kind of war that Earth hasn't seen since the founding of the Federation.

A couple of questions: 1) why don't any of the Federation ships have active bussard collectors? 2) what is the extraneous superstructure above the nacelles?

I looked at the crowdfunding video then polled a few friends who routinely contribute to such things, and several of them said they were put off by what they perceived as a dismissive attitude towards other fan films in the pitch. I tend to agree that it's unnecessary to pillory other productions as you hype your own.

YMMV

I don't think that quote is as much about Earth itself as it is about the Jem'Hadar's tactics of indiscriminately killing civilians and combatants, which may very well describe the Romulans as well. Overall, that's a good catch - gotta remember that.

Also, considering the bussard collectors, the short answer is that it wasn't until TNG where it seemed mandated that ALL bussard collectors looked red and glowing. Cochrane's Phoenix had gold nacelle caps. The "Cage"-era Enterprise had opaque, reddish-brown ones. And the refit Constitution, and the Constellation have grills. The Oberth has no ostensible collectors at all. So there have actually been a number of different styles of nacelle caps, and we don't really see a canonical problem with trying something different. The Pacific does still have spinning blades a-la the TOS Constitution, though. The glow color is blue. We considered making it purple, since that's actually the color of a real deuterium discharge, but we thought that was a little radical, and blue seemed like a good compromise.

The superstructure above the nacelles is a mount for the subspace antenna, long-range sensors, and thermal control systems.

I do feel really bad that it comes off that way to some people - it's not something that came up in any of our preview audiences, so it's not something we addressed ahead of time. But that wasn't the intent at all - those lines aren't meant to bash any other productions. There's nothing wrong with "trekkies playing dress-up" - which I don't consider a particularly derogatory comment anyways.

For instance, "Star Trek: A New Beginning" is one of the most low-budget fan productions I've seen, and I would definitely classify it as "trekkies playing dress-up," but I'm not ashamed to say that I really enjoyed it, because there's actually a lot of ingenuity that I respect (check out some of those Micro Machines battle sequences!)

Or even "Continues," which is definitely my favorite fan series, and far and beyond the call of duty for fan productions, is "guilty" of things I mention in the video - "replicating what's been shown on screen before," and Vic hasn't hidden the fact that dressing up as Captain Kirk is all part of the fun. I don't think that's a bad thing at all. It's simply just not what Pacific 201 is doing, and that's what we wanted to communicate. We're not saying "these productions are bad because they do these things." It's not a better/worse thing in my book. But this sort of approach is something that sets Pacific 201 apart, and that's what we wanted to communicate.
