P/C run amok...

Let's see... I mostly agree with you, but not entirely...

S1. No question.
S3. When I looked at it, there weren't as many good episodes as I remembered, but it still has this feeling of P/Cness.
S5. Just because there's no "there's something I've been meaning to tell you" doesn't mean there isn't some good material here. We have "Cause and Effect," "The First Duty," and "The Perfect Mate," not to mention "Violations" just for background.
S4. "Remember Me," "Q-Pid," and "The Host".
S6. Not as bad as all that. We do have "Lessons" and "The Chase," and both of them include breakfast.
S2. Is there any P/C in "Shades of Grey"? I can't be bothered to find out.

You'll notice I left out season seven. I'm still ambivalent about its status. Although it has "Attached" and "All Good Things," arguably the two most P/C episodes in the whole series, they really do come out of nowhere. Thus, I'm somewhat inclined to put it after season three, which did give the sense of an ongoing relationship. I'm willing to be argued with, though. :)

I'm inclined to put S7 quite high just because of AGT. As we've discussed the whole P/C thing seems to die off once she gets back in S3, and I'm not sure that breakfasting is a suitable alternative to those long smouldering looks. But That Kiss in AGT really puts the whole thing back on IMO.

I think we need to examine the evidence more closely...

Yeah, I'm convinced! :)

The Last Outpost
I know, I know, she's just checking his pulse.

BTW, I watched episode yesterday, and I couldn't see much reason for her to be touching him in that manner. He was obviously alive, so checking for a pulse was just an excuse. I'd like to add that in facing certain death, she abandons Wesley to their quarters and chooses to sit at Picard's right hand instead. Significant.

In the final draft script there is no mention of the "pulse checking," but we do have an explanation for why Beverly isn't with Wes. I think it's a nice exchange; it's a shame it was cut...

PICARD
(continuing)
Where is... your son Wesley?

BEVERLY
(beat)
I gave him... something. He'll
have a... terrible headache if we
live.

PICARD
You shouldn't have.

BEVERLY
Shouldn't have?
(weak but outraged)
He's my son. I love him...

PICARD
He has the... right to meet...
death awake.

Beverly eyes Picard for a long moment before she answers
with a nod.

BEVERLY
That is... a male perspective!

From deep in his thermal blankets, Picard makes a
MUFFLED SOUND.

BEVERLY
(continuing)
What?
(beat; louder)
What did you say, Jean-Luc?

PICARD
I said... rubbish!

I watched it over breakfast just to check, and you're right, of course. I'm not sure why I didn't remember it, except that it's in a different setting than the script, and Beverly only says that she was "tempted" to give Wesley the sedative. I think it loses something by not happening at the very end of the road.

As for the alleged "pulse check," I agree that there's no actual justification for it, and that it's just there to give Gates McFadden an excuse to make eyes at Patrick Stewart. Which she does, I must say, superbly.

My personal, unsubstantiated theory as to why P/C don't
become a realized couple in the series is not that they are not suited to one another; but because the writers created Picard from the very beginning to be a tragic figure. :(

Tragic might be a bit strong, but in terms of TV show expectations, he, like Kirk, was predestined to never keep the girl.

That season does have some anti-P/C moments however, like his indifference to her being shot in "Timescape", or this episode ...

Long term? He was at the Academy with a woman he sorta fancied. Meh. Doesn't worry me. :p

Besides, I'm writing a fanfic that will sort out Tapestry once and for all...

You go girl! ;)

We'll come back to Timescape later but I don't think Tapestry affects P/C either. She pretty much threw herself at him based on the fact they were parting for different assignments and his 'more mature' outlook. I doubt young Picard treated her as anything other than a friend and probably only afterwards wondered why she occasionally kept 'looking' at him.
