To those of you who entered this thread expecting a discourse on the insidious spread of political correctness, I humbly apologise...

I've grown tired of derailing other people's threads with my usual comments about the whole Picard/Crusher thing. It's time for me to have my own thread, for other people to derail!

To start things off, a study of the times Beverly has sat on his desk; not nearly as many times as I had thought, actually, but spanning the whole run of TNG, from the second episode ever to the last movie. Ah, the memories!

The first time we thought it was just intoxication (The Naked Now)

But it was also the "Crusher manuever" that persuaded him to take shore leave ( Captain's Holiday)

Tell me again that this was just a friendly kiss (All Good Things)

At least some people were in character in the movies... ( Nemesis)

Tomorrow you can look forward to an examination of the breakfast scenes!

I have no idea, and I'm sure you'll believe me when I say that the lack of McFadden reduced me to shouting at the television in frustration at several points! It's absolutely inexplicable to me, and I would love to know the answer, although it wouldn't help much.

It convinced me that Gates herself is a P/Cer. I couldn't help but notice the way she flings herself through the door the second it opens. Like she's expecting him to catch her or something. "Just friends" don't do that!

Now here's my question: Did Stuart Baird tell her to sit on Picard's desk or did Gates decide to do that on her own? My guess is it was Gates' decision.

And if I could go off topic for a sec, I just wanted to say how much I liked that creepy little mask behind Picard. Looks kinda funny and evil at the same time. I wonder what it's story is?

Judging from what she's said at conventions, I'm almost certain that she's a P/Cer! As for the "flinging" herself through the door, I think it can be explained by the fact that: 1)she didn't expect Picard to be right on the other side, and 2)she was late for breakfast. Sorry to be so dull for once...

I'd be surprised if Stuart Baird told her!

My guess is that it's just something that Gates McFadden does; she also perches on a sickbay table somewhere else in Nemesis, and I think once or twice sits on her own office desk during the series. Not to mention the number of times that she puts her feet up on a chair, which is truly surprising if you look for it!

First and foremost I think it's just a Beverly character trait, as I've said. In The Naked Now I think it was obviously flirty. But in the other instances... I think Picard can use his desk as a way to get distance; he is very much the Starship captain, sitting on the other side from his subordinate officers. You'll notice that in the other three episodes she's sitting on *his* side of the desk, so that she can easily hold hands with him, or look over his shoulder at his scrapbook. I think it's a way of showing that she's there not as his CMO, but as a friend, and possible more...

Much as I'm swept away by the idea I can't help thinking it's damn awkward to sit on the other side of the desk and still maintain eye contact. Not without some serious lounging away.

Still. Does Gates tend to sit down in other projects do you know? I just have this sneaky idea that ex-dancers probably have no knees and rush at the opportunity to take the weight off now and again.
