Arguably Wesley should have known, but I think it's quite possible that the Enterprise was the first starship that he had been on as anything other than a passenger. It's implied that the Enterprise is one of the first ships to take families, which means that he's hardly had the chance to find out about such things first hand. And even if he understands the rule, well, his mother outranks everyone on board aside from the captain and first officer. Surely, he must think, she can pull a few strings?

I still think Wesley said 'he's a pain isn't he Mom?' in a way that implied he was picking up on something she'd said and was seeking her approval by repeating it.

I have Wesley using this very same line in my mirror universe sequel, and I'll admit that it makes a hell of a lot more sense in that context. So, what do you think Beverly's been saying about Jean-Luc, then?

I agree with it, of course... I just think that Wesley could think that the captain could make exception for the senior officers' children, for example... or for young genius as him.

And he certainly did think he can have access to a ship's bridge (at least, once)... he asked Beverly for it, after all.

The novelisation does imply that Picard had a reputation as a pretty tough captain... it has Geordi discussing him with another junior officer. I believe the phrase "old burr-hog" is used, although it's not one that I've ever heard before.

I believe this was the line that was cut:
"Where is she? They say she's never late -- not since the old burrhog took over the captain's chair." I think it was an Ensign who was supposed to say this to Geordi.

I really don't want to know what Beverly told Wesley about Jean-Luc He seems to be really afraid of him, just take the scene in which he steps out of the holodeck with Riker and Data and they encounter Jean-Luc...

I don't think it was just Beverly who said "bad" things about Jean-Luc, though, but I think she didn't do anything to prove all the others wrong when they told Wesley that Jean-Luc was a man to be afraid of

Yes, and Riker somewhat pulled that officer up for these words... there is that scene in the draft script, too.

I'm not even sure it's so much fear as it is...an aura of intimidation. Picard is already legendary by the time he takes the helm of the Enterprise and that sort of reputation could intimidate folks. A reputation as a hero, as a skilled captain, and serving on a flagship under him? I'd be shaking in my shorts.

In E@F, Picard also came of as sort of a...prick. After a few episodes, the characterization of Picard became more solid and he lost much of that initial impression.

I like that prick! Those were the good days that added to the uncertainty of each episode.

BTW I'm feel I may have some double standards in saying children have no place on the brige of a ship. My mother has a very sweet photo of me aged about four, which I shall have to scan in sometime. It is the original mon capitaine on the bridge shot.

I also enjoyed the slightly different Picard of the first season. He seemed more French, somehow, and the prickliness did add a little more interpersonal tension to the usually quite placid show. It would have been interesting if they had managed to stretch it out a little longer, and actually showed how he became closer to his new crew. Not to mention to Beverly.

Oh, and mon capitaine, I would pay good money to see that picture!

Well, Jean-Luc *should* seem French, he IS French... (did I ever mention that I LOVE it when Pat is speaking French with that wonderful British accent? ) I love the "grumpy Picard". Can't say I don't enjoy the 3rd-7th season Picard, too, but the early Picard had something I can't quite explain. Let me put it like that: I would have *loved* to show him how to... er... *relax* a little.
Though I think he already is somewhat close to his new crew in the 2nd season (REALLY my fave season, guess why... GO PULASKI!! *holds up a sign*), I mean, look at him in the episode "Up The Long Ladder" when he laughs so hard in front of Riker, catching him by surprise by doing so... That's SO cute :thumbsup:

I often thought of creating a message board or a whole website for him, but I neither have the time nor the will to do so. I've always been a loner as a fan (on purpose), I actually often found myself ARGUING with other female fans of his (only the ones who are as crazy as I am, not the "normal" ones who like him as an actor and stuff, of course), so I rather stay away from interacting *too much* with other fans. This doesn't apply to male fans of his, though. I wonder why. I always love to discuss him with them.

I remember the "was Jack Crusher gay?" imbroglio very well.

I'm only half serious myself, but in the course of my mirror universe story, one scene that I was writing did make me think "Jack... Walker... wait a second...". I've never been quite the same since. The story doesn't spell anything out at all, and once you read it yourself, you'll have to tell me whether you agree with me about what it implies.
