P/C: our thread is eternal

I don't quite follow ya, Malleus. Do you mean that Beverly's professional persona is as big an obstacle to the relationship as Picard's?

I'd say it's a very different case in Resistance anyway because, a) it's not tv show continuity, b) they've already been together for a littlw while by then and c) we see at the start of that book that Beverly can switch to doctor mode even while in bed with him, and still be very much his partner.

And usually with challenges it's neither competition nor collaboration, it's, uh, complementary multiplicity, right?

^^^ Does Picard see it that way? [One need only remember his fling with Nella, but then again you mentioned that "they've already been together for a little while by then."]

You've got a new "rebuttal" PM. ;)

[The original question regarding author competition vs. author collaboration still stands.]

I haven't read that book, so I can't really comment on that part.

As for the other question, a fan fiction challenge is when one person challenges another person or group of people to write something specific, often within set guidelines. It is not a collaboration and whether or not it is a competition depends upon the challenge. I'm thinking that in this case it probably won't be.
There is a great challenge competition in the fan fiction forum, though, if you're into that. Just look for the "January Challenge." Each month's winner poses the next month's challenge. (Naraht started the first one just over two years ago and it's still going.)

Anyway, I digress. The idea is to see the different takes that different people have on the same basic idea. For example, everyone might write a story about P/C with a 2000 word limit with romantic classics as the theme. One person might write about Picard reading some famous novel and thinking about Beverly, another might a P/C story in that style, and yet another might have them reading to one another, perhaps for one of Beverly's productions. Then all three would post their stories as threads in the fan fiction forum and link to them in the thread where the challenge was posed.

That's just an example, though. I have no idea what or if the challenge will actually be. (You're welcome to join in if we do one, though.)

^^^ I myself laid out the open challenge earlier, but I was and still am OK with the possibility of collaboration between those willing to take up the challenge (two or more authors with one fanfic). Feel free to join in with them, if they're OK with it. ;)

As for the first one, I'm sorry. I was trying to catch up quickly and totally missed it.

As for the second one, I just mistook it for part of the conversation, because of the book you mentioned.

Do you want to put them together as one challenge, or just do one of them? I like the second option, myself, especially if it doesn't have to be in the post-Nem novel timeline. (Some fans hated DIW and never believed it, and I happen to be one of them.)

^^^ Actually, I want a fanfic set just after DIW. :p ;)

Go ahead and collaborate with them, if they'll allow you (and that is conditional on whether or not they're even collaborating). :)

^I wasn't looking to collaborate, actually. That part was just a misunderstanding.

Okay, post-DIW P/C. I'm in. I'll even be a good girl and won't have it turn out that Jean-Luc misheard her and that Beverly would have never uttered the words, "I've been a fool, Jean-Luc."

Anyone else in?

When do you want this by? How long should it be?

Alright, being the "master BONCer," and now that there's some activity going, here are the parameters:

1) Occurs just after DIW
2) Should NOT be short like vignettes (anything longer is OK - author's discretion)
3) Collaboration allowed
4) End-story HOT SEX "encouraged" ( :D )

^Well, I had a late-in-life vignette in mind, so I guess I need to come up with something else. Okay. How long do you want it to be, or just any length as long as it's not as short as a vignette?

The challenge sounds interesting and I'm looking forward to reading the entries. One small problem for me, I haven't read DIW. Will some kind soul tell me what happens so I'm fully prepped for the fanfic. :)

"The master BONCer"? :vulcan: :vulcan: :vulcan: Heh.

Basic plot of DiW as I remember it (ie one which completely neglects the whole Romulan plot, cause I was only readin' for the P/C love):

Flashback. Spy-type dude remembering Crusher wedding where at he collected the DNA of important Fleet types. He had some trouble collecting Picard's though, because Picard is too busy being miserably in love with the bride to use cutlery or have a drink.

Present. Picard is moping around the Enterprise. He misses Data, Will, and Deanna, but he really misses Beverly on account of still being very much in love with her. He contacts her by subspace, which is the conversation from the cut scene in Nem, which only makes him miss her more.

At some point stuff happens with Romulans.

Beverly goes to a frozen planet in the back of beyond to help cure a plague. We get a flashback to ArvadaIII which was apparently a grand colony until a spaceship arrived full of alliens with the same disease present Crusher is on back of beyond planet to cure. We get a scene about Beverly's first boyf, who then dies, because Beverly has clearly been bad luck for men for a very long time.

Romulans attack. Sela's one of them.

Beverly is declared missing, presumed dead. Admiral dude contacts Picard to inform him. Picard refuses to believe it. The admiral gives Picard the mission of bringing a new doctor to back of beyonf planet to help with the cure. If he likes he can also look for Bev while he's there, but the admiral is kinda "don't hold your breath".

The Enterprise is still up on the blocks from driving nose first into the Scimitar so Picard heads off with a motley crew of people whom of I've never heard before, but I'm assured they're in other tie in novels and have something to do with the Stargazer.

Intrigue. More stuff with Romulans. Beverly's not dead and escapes from her cell after some more flashbacks. She's helped by a Romulan for reasons I can't remember.

Geordi and Worf decide to track down the captain and Beverly and help if they can. Janeway tells them to stop it. They do. This plotline goes exactly nowhere.

Picard's being Picard and understanding what's going on with the Romulans a lot better than I do. One of his exshipmates notices he's quiet and broody during any downtime. Other exshipmate explains that he's thinking about Crusher, and exshipmate number one realises that Picard has deeper feelings for Beverly than any of them had realised. (I mention this scene, cause I thought it was rather sweetly written, not over the top)

Stuff happens. It involves Romulans.

A meeting is arranged to return Beverly to Picard. The rendezvous is ambushed by Sela and her people. Beverly gets to be all action hero-y, which rocks. The Romulans are eventually subdued.

Picard makes a serious faux pas. He's so relieved to see Beverly alive and well that while he hugs her he tells her how much he loves her, breaking the unspoken rule that they don't say that kind of thing out loud. Beverly immediately becomes withdrawn.

On the way back to Earth things are tense as Beverly remains distant and kinda weird with Picard. He's relieved when they go their seperate ways.

Cut to Picard in his Ready Room feeling a bit sorry for himself because he's been chasing redheaded women around the ship thinking they're Beverly but they never are. (OK, it's better written than that, but that's the gist ;))

He's paged that the new CMO has beamed aboard, he says "send him in" only to be informed it's a woman. When she enters he can't bring himself to turn around, and makes some lame excuse for not meeting her before. Then she speaks and it's Beverly.

And then [argh] she comes over to Picard and says "I've been such a fool" because obviously every complication in their relationship is due to her bad decisions, and she kisses him. A lot.

End DiW.

Oh, please stop saying "master BONCer." I try to keep the dirty side of my sense of humor to a minimum, but by saying that really quickly and pronouncing "BONCer" as "bonker," I could say some aweful things.

Is anyone else in on this challenge?

^^^ I didn't originate that term, though.

Awhile back, some poster referred to me as such, but NOT because of my association with the P/C folks. [If anything else, it's a misnomer, given the recent threads I've started. ;) :D ]

^I'm not touching that statement. I'm not touching that statement.

Why did they call you that if it wasn't because of P/C?

(Beverly on Jean-Luc)

Anyhow, they did so probably because I didn't cough up a more accurate description of my REAL position at that time (that is, "GHSS"). ;)

I just realized that we've had this conversation before. I asked where you got that name. I was unclear and you thought I was asking what it meant, and then you told me how you got it (sort of). Feeling deja vu?

Yes, I'm sure that every P/Cer has heard the term BonC.
