OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors write

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

I was just thinking the other day how Dayton & Kevin, Greg, Keith, DM and DRG III would do an amazing job doing work on the Castle series. I know they haven't announced a new Nicki Heat book in the show, but it has been said that the Derrick Storm novels are coming out over the next few years and I think it'd be cool if each of them were to get a chance to tackle the Derrick Storm character. But if and when they do a fourth Nicki Heat book, I'd peg Dayton and Kevin to write it. Why? Because they did such a great job with Empress Sato in "Age of the Empress" that they would give that same bravado, charm and appeal to Nicki as well.

Oh, and I wait impatiently for the day that David Mack gets to write '24'....seriously...I hope the movie does insanely well thus allowing this to happen.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

^ As much as I'd love to write a 24 novel, I'd actually rather read one written by Dayton Ward.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

They'd never do a Nikki Heat book that wasn't credited to "Richard Castle." And they have their own ghostwriters for that, evidently series creator Andrew Marlowe and mystery novelist/screenwriter Tom Straw. But I think the Derrick Storm comic was attributed to its real author and billed as an "adaptation" of an imaginary Castle novel.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

The Derrick Storm graphic novel was written by Brian Michael Bendis and Kelly Sue DeConnick. The second graphic novel coming in October will be written by the two of them as well. It was indeed billed as adaptation of an fictional Castle novel since we saw them plug it in a comic store at the start of this current season, and Rick seemed excited about it, although Rick is excited about a lot of things so that's not surprising lol. I'm surprised they didn't have DeConnick and Bendis guest star in the episode doing a signing or something.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

I'd love to see KRAD and Christopher writing novels set in the Mass Effect universe.

KRAD would do well at playing up the human (by which I also mean alien) and interpersonal aspects of the franchise instead of the militaristic one, and Christopher could have some fun diving into the mechanics of its tech lore (like the way long-distance communication works in the ME universe). Both are things the four novels released up to now haven't done enough of, but the universe as depicted in the game and in-game "Codex" encyclopedia offers a lot of possibilities.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

I mentioned this in a similar thread before, but I think Christopher would knock out of the ball park a "Doctor Who" novel...using any Doctor frankly. I know I'd buy and read it in a second.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

Not to gloat or anything, but I suppose this is as good as time as any to mention that I'm going to be writing a Leverage novel soon.

Should be a lot of fun!
Very cool. When's it coming out?

^ And you also aced us all by scoring the one and only (to date) Warehouse 13 novel. I have to say, it really ticks me off that I can't seem to get any traction from tie-in editors at houses other than Simon & Schuster. On the other hand, maybe this is the universe's way of telling me stop writing tie-ins and go write more original novels, instead.... :)
This seems like a good time to ask if anyone here knows yet if there will be more W13 or Eureka novels?

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

Not sure when the Leverage book is coming out. The manuscript isn't due until September, so probably not for awhile.

At the moment, I'm not aware of any more WH13 novels in the works, but I'm crossing my fingers. I'd certainly love to write another one.

Sorry for the confusion! In my head it sounded a lot better than it came out on the screen. I get that none of the Derrick Storm/Nicki Heat books would get anybody else's name BUT Richard Castle on it, what I was thinking was that it'd be fun and awesome if some of our Trek writers were asked to be the Castle ghost-writers and each get a crack at it. However, that definitely did not come out right, and get that what I was thinking and what I was saying definitely did not align with each other. Again, sorry for the confusion.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

Well, what I meant is that they'd be unlikely to change ghostwriters. The books have their own characteristic voice that reflects the writing style of the series, and I think it would undermine the illusion if the authorial voice changed. Also, the books are so symbiotically linked with the show that they aren't like normal tie-ins; they pretty much have to be done by someone directly connected to the show, like Marlowe, the creator/showrunner.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

I wonder if the Trek authors could salvage the Star Wars EU. Lord knows Karen Travis has done enough damage to the franchise. The Dark Side of the Force is strong with that one.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

^Now, now. There are those who think the current Trek authors have "damaged" this franchise. Tastes differ.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

So far, from what I know, the only ST author who successfully mastered SW is A.C. Crispin.

I'm not sure if you're defining that just by how many Star Wars books they've done or by something more subjective, but Crispin is tied with Christie Golden at three Star Wars novels and two short stories each. K.W. Jeter and Alan Dean Foster also have three Star Wars novels apiece, if you count Foster's ghostwritten novelization of the first movie.

Michael Reaves, who's been a pretty prolific SW novelist, technically counts as a Trek author by virtue of co-writing the teleplay to TNG: "Where No One Has Gone Before," though he's never done Trek prose fiction or comics.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

Michael J. Friedman was contracted for a trilogy, Knightfall, which got cancelled (when they changed the direction of the New Jedi Order series it was a part of, not for quality reasons) before he finished the second book.

Michael A. Stackpole also counts on the same ground as Michael Reaves - he was a writer on two games, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Star Trek: Judgment Rites.

Greg Bear's also wrote one novel in each franchise, but I wouldn't count him as "prolific" like Reaves and Stackpole.

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

Barbara Hambly and Vonda McIntyre also did SW novels. (And apparently, they bombed badly).

Hambly's couldn't have bombed too badly, since she was brought back for a second as well as some short stories.

Which reminds me, I know that the Reeves-Stevens had at least one short story in the KJA-edited anthologies.

Yes, the Reeves-Stevens did.

"A Bad Feeling: The Tale of EV-9D9 (Tales from Jabba's Palace).
"The Tale of the Wolfman and the Lamproid (Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina).

Back on the topic: anyone else think the Martin and Mangels duo could do a good job with Star Wars as well?

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

To restart this thread: how about Criminal Minds books written by David Mack?

Re: OT: What other franchises would you like to see the Trek authors w

^ Never watched the show, no interest.
