OT: Greg Cox The 4400 novel

Waitaminnit, waitaminnit ... Keith and Greg, you're telling me that Smallville AND Supernatural are not really filmed in Kansas?
Er, well, to be fair, Supernatural makes no claim to take place in Kansas. It doesn't take place anywhere, they travel all over the country -- they've been to Kansas, as well as dozens of other places (all of which, of course, look just like Vancouver....).

^^Yes... we Trekkies know that outer space actually looks like various locations around Southern California, especially Vasquez Rocks.

Vasquez Rocks are actually either a Preserver or Shedai artifact that has duplicates all over the Milky Way, just waiting for some unfortunate soul to unlock their horrible, horrible secrets....;)

Ah. Well, to be more fair, I've never even seen the show. I had this impression, though, that Sam and Dean were from Lawrence or something.

Kevin (Yes, that's Lawrence, home of the Final Four-bound University of Kansas Jayhawks)

^ Yeah, they're from Kansas, but there've been all of three or four episodes that take place there over three seasons.

My favorite was when they were supposed to do an episode in Mississippi, but it snowed, so they dubbed in that it was Missouri suffering an unseasonal snowstorm, which they thought would be more believable....

So sometimes shows that take place in New York, but don't have the initials L&O in them, are actually filmed in New York then?

I think there are actually a lot of shows that are filmed/taped in New York for real. The CSI thing strikes me as an exception. Perhaps that production isn't based in NY because it's part of an overall franchise that's based in LA.

I watched the first episode of CSI:NY - "Blink" - with the commentary the other day (just got it on DVD, yay!!) and approximately two thirds of that episode were filmed on location in NYC. It was felt by Anthony Zuiker that doing so would set the tone for the series as would the "crushed blues and blacks" colour scheme. This episode was also the first time since 9/11 where a studio was allowed to film at Ground Zero. Several episodes have been shot partially in NYC, budget permitting.

If anyone's interested, I see that amazon just posted the cover copy for the 4400 book on-line.

It's on my list, which I might add is growing longer by the month. I have 16 books on my own-and-to-read pile and about twenty more on my to-buy-and-read pile.

Sounds cool. I just wish I didn't have so many other things to read right now.
