OT - Doing Some Forbidden Planet Research

Forbidden Planet is still one of the best looking sci-fi films out there, even of some of it looks a little retro. It's got awesome visuals, great characters and a screenplay based on Shakespeare, you wont go far wrong using it as inspiration for a movie.

There are Johnson's blueprints and there are also studio blueprints on display at larryman's site.

There is also a set done by Eric Christiansen on sale at http://www.jackill.com/Pages/FP_Collection_Page1.htm

He's also done plans of Robby, the tractor, and Robby's land-car thingy.

Christensen's blueprints of C57-D incorporate details that were created by Johnson - the hull weapons, for example, which appear nowhere in the film or the designs for the film. Do you know if he and Johnson consulted on the plans at all?

When Dr. Morbius was telling Commander Adams of the death of his crewmates and the destruction of the Bellerophon ship... I would have liked to have seen a fade to memory, showing the use of the Metaluna saucer from 1955 “This Island Earth” used as the Bellerophon lifting off, and then being vaporized in the sky. That would have established the Metaluna class of saucer as a civilian exploration ship in the FP universe.

The Metaluna saucer is a good size for civilian space exploration.
Compared to the C-57D, the Metaluna ship is a silly and dated design. That cavernous control deck is mostly wasted space. And what's the purpose of the atom sculpture on a pole?

Well... I'm proposing that only the Metaluna hull would be used - because it is a classic recognizable saucer. But it's original alien interior would all be replaced with human technology components - like from C-57-D, LIS TOS Jupiter-2, and ST TOS Enterprise.

For example, after removing all original interior objects from the Metaluna, then:

* install the lighted arched structure ribs, the air-lock, and possibly the large forward view-port of the LIS Jupiter-2 into the it's command deck dome.
* add crew freeze-tubes, laboratories, machine rooms, living quarters, food galley, storage rooms, etc. to the decks 2 and 3.
* add ship drive engine, air-locks, storage rooms to bottom deck 4. Also add a vehicle bay and hatch to the rear of bottom deck 4, to allow drive out of land vehicles like LIS Chariot after the saucer has landed.

So... the wasted interior space and the crazy atom-on-a-pole thing, etc. of the original Metaluna saucer will be gone. But the 'still recognizable' (classic) hull would remain for 1950's sci-fi fans nostalgia.

If such a modified Metaluna saucer could be patched into the original 1956 Forbidden Planet movie (as a memory squence of Dr. Morbius describing the fate of the Bellerophon), then... it opens the nostalgia door for other FP 'civilans in space' adventures to other planets as FP spin-offs. :techman:

BTW: if someone wanted to create the sequence of the Metaluna/Bellerophon being 'vaporized on lift-off' from Altair-4... there was a 3d Metaluna Saucer model for the Poser CGI program, available for purchase at Renderosity.com a few years ago - but no longer available there now. It was called "50's Flying Saucers" by artest: dlangerher. I have that purchased Metaluna Saucer Poser CGI model (but not the skill to use it), if it is no longer available anywhere otherwise. It would be nice if someone could add a Chariot Bay hatch to it's bottom rear location, and a 'hide-able' Jupiter-2 large forward view-port to the front of it's dome.

^ Axeman, your metaluna.jpg link don't work. I get this message from it: "You don't have permission to access /thumbnails/metaluna.jpg on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

Would you like me to PM you a couple pages of Metaluna Saucer exterior dimensions (in inches) that I scanned from "The Saucer Fleet" book? They are currently .tif format files, but I could convert them to .jpg format if you need.

Damn, you're right! Must be some permissions thing, I'll need to look into that. There was some server maintenance going on over the weekend, maybe they've done something to my site. Just go to www.kennyscrap.com and in the models section it's under 'spares & repairs' because it's so crap. As I say I didn't have any real references when I made it, so it's not very good. I'll take any plans you guys have and I'll make a proper one no sweat.

Check this out kids...

If anyone wants a real model of the C57-D based on my admittedly slightly off model, then you can buy it at the link above. Select the material you want it made in and off you go. If you want it larger or smaller just let me know and I'll upload another version. I can only go so small because of thickness tolerances.

Shane Johnson's blueprints are nice but I have a problem with the amount of toilets on that thing. That's a gross waste of space. If I recall correctly a Gato class boat from WWII only had 3-4 toilets for almost 100 men. On the C57D I would imagine at most 2 heads because of it's small size.

You're forgetting Cookie's weekly "chili night" in the galley.

Ah, it gives new meaning to "officers' mess"...

M.

German subs only had 2, and one of them was filled with food and supplies on the outbound trip. Building sites have something 1 toilet per 25 men, and a few urinals takes care of even more.

Johnson applies a certain amount of default "Star Trek" thinking to the C57-D and I think that includes some aspects of the interior layout. The aforementioned hull-mounted weapons, for example, are kind of a reflexive "space opera" or Trekish feature that aren't derived from anything we see or are told about either the United Planets or the cruiser in the film.

True, that we did not see any hull-mounted weapons. But there must have been some, of some type. While still in Altair-4 orbit, Bosun ordered: "Combat stations. Blaster men, activate your scopes". So the C-57-D had 'Blasters' that could function while in space flight. So I am ok with that "space opera" aspect of his blueprints.

Well, had an hour tonight so knocked this up with blueprints kindly provided by Larryman...

60m x 52m x 12.5m are the dimensions, I've only just completed the basic shape and the stencil of the windows. Tomorrow or Wednesday I'll inset the windows, cut in the hatches and surface it properly.

That looks good, so far. I would hope your model does not have as harsh of a surface plating texture as that of the Poser model I showed a few messages back. And also not have the Poser model's absolute flat surfaces on the top and bottom of it's wing portion, and surrounding the command dome. A flat bottom to the bottom deck is ok.

While on the point of creating hatches and windows... while your building this model "Metaluna Saucer", can you also easily do a duplicate of it as a "Bellerophon Saucer" - with: a LIS Jupiter-2-style wide 3-pane forward view-port and covering crash-shields, and an air-lock hatch added to it's command dome; and an upward-launch Spacepod Bay split-door hatch directly behind the command dome (into top of deck-2); and a Chariot Bay hatch to the point of the rear of the bottom deck (maybe ST Enterprise hanger deck - split-clamshell type)?

I suppose so. Are you intending the big windows to be on the smallest bulge on the top, or on the main upper deck where the portholes are? If I stick an airlock and big windows on that smallest bulge then this becomes a much larger ship.
