OT - Doing Some Forbidden Planet Research

Hey guys!

I already posted in the Trek tech forum, but seems like no bites. I'm working on a project wherein I am (basically) trying to come up with a technical manual for the C-57D from Forbidden Planet (arguably the finest episode of Star Trek ever made ;)). But I'm having trouble tracking down good images, specifically of the interior set. I'd also love to find some blueprints f the stage plans. I have one such image, but it's obviously cropped out of a larger page. Any leads on where I might find such things?

Also, who knows where there's some good free software for getting screencaps from a DVD? I have the movie on DVD, but my computer is only equipped with Apple's DVD Player which disables the screen-grab function.

Also, I know it's maybe more of a tech subject, but anyone care to speculate on the capabilities of the C-57D? Once I actually begin to work on the images for this project, I expect I'll post 'em here.

Thanks!

Seems silly to have your screen grab disabled. Can't help you with any background info, but there are some decent quality screencaps here. As for alternate software, I personally use VLC. I don't know if it has screen grab capability, but considering all that it can do, I can't imagine they'd leave that part out.
Hope you get some decent information on the C-57D - I'd like to see some of that myself!

I just did a google search for pictures from forbidden planet and Blueprints from forbidden planet, and I got all kinds of cool stuff!

computers tend to pipe DVD data directly from the player to the screen buffer, bypassing the parts of the OS which might access it to make a copy. you would need to rip the DVD to a video file on your hard drive (n.b. this is currently illegal in the US), and take your screen caps off that.

I own a simple emachine that has PowerDVD pre installed that is great at screen grabs, I am sure you can install it seperatly.

Back in the early ’80s, an outfit called The Noron Group published a set of C-57D plans drawn by Shane Johnson. They show a whole bunch of hypothetical stuff that was never seen in the movie, but would be essential on an actual interstellar spacecraft -- like officers' quarters, a sickbay, cargo holds, and TOILETS! And it all fits nicely into the canonical dimensions of the "real" saucer. There are a whole bunch of technical specs, too, regarding the ship's capabilities, its propulsion technology, and the makeup of the crew. The plans are long out of print but they show up pretty frequently on Evilbay.

I swear by Media Player Classic, and it comes as an option with the absolute must-have codec pack for videos, CCCP.

At the moment, MPC does have a x64 edition (which runs great in Win7), but some of the codecs in CCCP are x86 only, so I have both the included x86 version of MPC and the x64 edition. Both versions run great, and both can be set to be your standard default player for everything, and the level of user control for playback is empowering beyond belief.

That last feature is especially nice for DVD playback, as the picture is usually encoded in 4:3 where as the content is meant to be shown in 16:9 or 2.35:1. You can set it to however you want in two right clicks.

Looks like you have to be a member of that Group just to get in and look around (or even ask to join)...

There are blueprints, set diagrams and photos galore in this group:

Into every life a little rain must fall.

The information requested is there and it's free. No one's putting a gun to anyone else's head.
What? That makes no sense. I have a Yahoo account, and all I get is "Sorry, this group is available to members ONLY. You are not allowed to access this group." I can't even find anywhere to request to join the group.

I'd like to know how to join this group as well. I can't even find it via a search on Yahoo.

I use a helper program called "DVD Capture" to get screen caps with my Mac.

Hey... wait a minute! I own that Forbidden Planet group. So this is where the sudden interest is stemming from. All of a sudden, I'm getting request in my e-mail to join a group that I put on ice in Sept 2008, for lack of any members posting any discussions.

Ok Joe and Ron - recieved you e-mail request. I think I sent you both a 'request to join' e-mail message from Yahoo, which I hope has a link for you to follow to join the group. I have not before added members this way, so... hoping it works to my understanding. But you will probably have to be members of Yahoo for it to work.
