OT - Dauntless [Lensman]

Klaus

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Here's something I've been kicking about for a long time, finally getting around to posting something after some recent progress... a version of the Dauntless from E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series.

The teardrop shape is to minimize drag, since the "inertialess" drive means that its speed is only limited by the friction of the interstellar medium. :D

ty!

Here's an update... made the windows round, added a bunch of blaster tubes fore and aft [the better to rend Boskone] and a couple of dishes.

I like it, although... the one (deflector/radio) dish on the starboard side doesn't look like it's attached to the hull, to be honest. Just seems to be floating next to it, doing its own thing. ;)

Still, way way better than anything I could scribble. Hats off!

Cheers,

Are the ships described as having this teardrop shape in the books?

Though I'm not familiar with the Lensman series, I bet Buck Rogers would soil his boxers if he saw this thing in his rear-view mirror.

Seriously - very nice old-school design! :techman:

ty, and this actually can't be the Dauntless itself, as a perusal of the wiki page reminded me that the ultra-fast "superdreadnoughts" of the Lensman series were cigar-shaped for even more speed.. this will be just a regular battleship class, which were indeed teardrop-shaped... I'll try the Dauntless next.

Here's a primary-colors option with a bit of aztecing. :D

It's been a long time since I read the Lensman books, so I'm not sure my slang is right, but I'd say this is all QX and on the board. A real seven sector call out!

lol, sounds perfect! :D

Thanks a lot, and here's some more weapon, it wasn't sufficiently "bristling"...

...made the outer gun positions into turrets, as there were too many fixed ones. Also added smaller turrets back by the engines, and torpedo launchers beneath the front turrets.

I think it's about done, working on the Battle of Ploor now.

Which is done! :D

This battle, in typical mind-blowing "Doc" Smith style, climaxes with the planet of Ploor being smashed between two planetoids "borrowed" from another dimension where everything is composed of tachyons and thus moves faster then light -- so they hit Ploor at superluminal speeds from both sides simultaneously when their intrinsic velocities are restored.

Here's a go at the actual Dauntless lol, the super-dreadnaught class, with the battleship alongside for comparison...

Interesting design ... Even if friction (and drag) isn't something you need to worry about in space. Newton's First Law, after all. ;)

Well this was EE "Doc" Smith's design, not mine lol... with the "inertialess" drive, the only limit to speed was the friction of the gases in interstellar space, so even that mattered at speeds of ninety parsecs an hour! :D
