thought I would inflict another round of ships for you.
These ships will be under the heading 'obscure ships' and represent the ships that served starfleet but never got the glory like the Constitutions and galaxies.
the first ship is the Celeste class cruiser
The Celeste class were designed in 2280 to complement the excellent Constitutions in service.
The design team looked at the Constitutions and decided on various changes. Firstly they lowered the warp nacelles to fit under the primary hull plus they dropped the primary hull by 3 decks. This had the benefit of making the shield envelope smaller and stronger by 15%. However the ships suffered from a loss of manuverability then the Constitutions but it was considered acceptable. The weapons layout was increased to three torpedo tubes forward though the phasers were the same as the Constitutions.
Starfleet ordered a batch of 12 built hoping to replace the aging Constitution class though by the time the 6th vessel was built it was plain the capabilities of the Celeste were less than the designers had hoped so the 8th and 9th vessels were halted at the framework stage while the designers worked out the problems which seemed impossible to fix. Then the designers had an idea, instead of a replacement for the constitutions why not a stable mate?
Thus they redefined the parameters of the Celeste’s design.
They added extra sensor suites to offset the lower sensor gain of the original design by adding a pylon mounted sensor pod slightly above the primary hull.
They had to sacrifice a phaser bank and a torpedo launcher but this was fine with the designers as they no longer saw the Celeste as protectors of the federation but as the eyes instead.
And so in 2273 the first of the new batch of 6 were built and once they had proven themselves the first six were refitted during their scheduled fleet refit.
These ships excelled at their new role as science and research ships which were 70% more than that of the constitutions and more capable then their big sisters though lacking in combat.
In the end 26 ships were built before their retirement in 2330.
However, before their retirement and idea was proposed where maybe a weapons pod could be designed to swap out in place of the sensor pod but this idea was shelved as it was not deemed cost effective, however the idea was brought up again 80 years later when the nebula class was built.
the second vessel is the 'Defender' class escort
The Defender class escort were based on the Oberth prototype. The team removed the lower sensor pod and moved the warp core to the main hull which was built up to accommodate the systems. This made the ship more manuverable then the team first realised.
A torpedo launch system was fitted on the underside of the hull allowing the class to fend off any pirate attacks though they were not designed to take on a capital ship.
They have a crew of 40 with only the 2 senior officers having a cabin of their own, the rest of the crew had to either share a cabin with one other person for the junior officers or three to a cabin for the rest. The mess hall and recreational facilities are small but adequate.
The small hanger can hold up to three shuttle pods or at a pinch one class five shuttlecraft.
The sensor suite is aimed mainly for combat with one out of three ships equipped with sensors to detect a cloaked ship.
The Defenders operate in groups of three with one outfitted for detecting a cloak.
The speed of the class is average for the time with warp 7 being the top speed, which is still very capable of keeping up with the convoys etc.
However by 2320 the Defenders were beginning to show their age and as newer classes were built the Defenders were phased out with the last group being decommissioned by 2330.
The defenders were an idea I got from another site years ago
