Oscar Winning Movies You Despise!

Have to agree that Chariots of Fire was painfully boring; while OK, Gandhi was also mostly boring and underwhelming.
OTOH, I really liked A Beautiful Mind and especially Annie Hall.

I do think Atonement shouldve beat out No Country For Old Men but I did like the latter.

I liked all of the 2007 nominees, though I thought Juno really wasn't Best Picture material. Atonement was the one I was rooting for, but I would have been happy if Michael Clayton had won.

Citizen Kane's influence is everywhere; it brings to mind the old joke about the guy who saw Hamlet and said, "What's the big deal? All they did was recite a bunch of old clichés!"

To a certain extent old movies must be considered in the context of their time to be appreciated. However, watching movies for pleasure is not like taking a film class, and I understand people like what they like.

That is all an excellent point to make. While hindsight can reveal biases or influences of past evaluations, it's still a good idea to recall as best as you can all of the factors that may have fed said evaluation. I've never taken a film class myself, so my opinions on a film need to be taken with an asteroid of salt. On the other hand, I do watch a great many movies, and I feel I am pretty much your average moviegoer. Hence, what I think about a film is liable to be reflected by many simply because I fit into that "average" classification.

I still to this day love Chariots of Fire for many reasons. The costuming, the scenery... very beautifully executed. Of course my brother used to joke "what costuming? It'sa bunch of guys running up & down the beach in theri underwear:  But the movie's story itself - if glamorized and altered somewhat - is what thrills me the most. That's partly due to the fact that they are stories of faith. Each man had his faith challenged - and ultimately rewarded - in a different way. However, at the same time those types of stories don't entertain everyone, which means other evaluations can be every bit as valid.

I honestly would like to hear what a random sampling of the memebrs of the Academy has to say about what criteria they use when voting for various awards.

I actually really liked The Departed and is one of the few Scorsese movies I really got involved in, a real return to form after that borderline folly, Gangs of New York, which was pretty much The Waterworld of the 2000s. :cardie:

I kinda of liked Raging Bull as well.

I liked A Beautiful Mind, in fact it's one of my favorite films.

I haven't seen a lot of the Oscar winners but one I will complain about is Million Dollar Baby. I find very little redeeming in that film.
