Yeah, I like the idea that it’s Data’s stardate class of ‘78. He’s a machine. He states the more precise stardate than the calendar year. “Ignited the midnight petroleum” for that one.
For whatever it's worth, I'm pretty sure the "class of '78" reference was based on the old FASA/Spaceflight Chronology dating system rather than what they eventually codified.
 
I rather doubt anybody bothered with SFC at that point any longer. And in any case, FASA hadn't touched upon TNG at that point yet, for obvious reasons...

But what FASA would proceed to do with TNG would probably be affected a great deal by the 78 reference.
