Orions & the Federation

Like I said beta content as much as i like that verson its not cannon

In that case, the answer to every Trek question not explicitly answered onscreen is:
"We don't know yet,
We don't know yet,
We don't know yet,
We don't know yet,
We don't know yet,
We don't know yet,
We don't know yet..."

Why are we even here?

I run a Trek game. (since 1997) I need to know. So when canon fails, or simply cannot apply I make it up. I make up a Hell of a lot because filmed Trek gives us a very narrow viewing window on the Universe.

To speculate and think of possibilities?
Nobody has to like or accept anything the expanded universe(s) says. As far as I'm concerned it's its own continuity and has no influence on the TV continuity.

There are things I wish were canon like the 5th season Enterprise novels that undo that stupid finale *shrugs* but they just arnt and thats it

I never really got into the novels, I read a couple and didn't like either of them, so I didn't read any more of them. I did play Star Trek online for a bit, and tbh I really liked the Romulan Republic stuff and really *wish* it was canon, but Picard went into a different direction with it and that's the way it is.

So he's into dominance roleplay, nothing wrong with that :p

He didn't seem to play a particularly dominant role when immersed in the fantasy, though. For all we know, his big dream was to liberate an Orion harem and be a celebrated hero for it - but facing one of 'em animal women was something he apparently hadn't preplanned much for. Or then he was just thrust into one of Boyce's fantasies that the Talosians mistook for his...

The interesting element there is the sleazy guy in apparent (even if rare) Starfleet uniform, possibly based on the reality/stereotype of Orion slave trade. Did it proceed with the approval of profiteering key Starfleet officers at the frontier?

How far are we taking this? In TFF, the ship makes it to the center of the galaxy like it’s not unusual. In TWoK, Khan recognized Chekov when he wasn’t part of the crew till after “Space Seed.”

Are other series like this?
Yes they are, just ask Data what year he graduated from Starfleet Academy.
Where is it said Chekov joined the crew after "Space Seed"? At best it can be inferred that he joined after "Mudd's Women".

He was there in "Catspaw", which takes place more than a hundred stardates before "Space Seed"...

In TFF, Kirk is adamant that one can't reach the Center of the Galaxy. That a madman believes the opposite doesn't mean Kirk would be wrong. He was wrong about the first obstacle on the way there being impenetrable, but that could be the full extent of his errors.

And of course Data graduated from a class of 78, so there were 77 witnesses to him graduating - this is how he shoots down Rikers insulting "Oh, so your rank is purely honorary?" insinuation. :vulcan:

Nah it's "Starfleet class of '78".
Can't imagine a graduating class as small as 78 people (with no one watching the ceremony) or him using such sloppy language.

We’re going to need more than that.

How do you figure?

FYI “Space Seed” was Season 1, Episode 22 (of 29). Koenig joined the cast for Season 2. His first episode was “Catspaw,” though he was in the season opener “Amok Time,” aired out of order.

On Data’s graduation year, from IMDB:

In the Holodeck, Data states that he graduated from Starfleet Academy in the "Class of '78," which, given TNG's establishment in the 24th century, could be either "2278" (meaning Data would have been in Starfleet for 23 years at the beginning of the 24th century) or "2378." However, this contradicts the dating that has since been established for TNG - Data himself specifically states in The Neutral Zone (1988) that the Earth year at that time was 2364. In addition, other shows established that Data was not built until 2336 and that he had graduated from the Academy in 2345. Data's "Class of '78" comment has thus been deemed a continuity error and it can only be speculated as to what it could mean from an in-universe perspective.

We’re going to need more than that.
How about O'Brien's ever changing rank?
Geordi's wrong uniform in Yesterday's Enterprise
A graphic with wrong Enterprise on it in "The Naked Now"
Data using contractions
Voyager's now you see it, now you don't astrometrics lab.
Schrodinger's...er, Ben Sisko's Dad. (is he dead or not?)
Trills. Ridges! No, spots!!!
And speaking of spots, what breed and gender is Data's cat?

How do you figure?

When Koenig started playing Chekov on Star Trek is not relevant as to when Chekov joined the crew of the Enterprise. All we know is Chekov didn't not know Mudd, therefore he joined the crew after "Mudd's Women". If there was a line in "Catspaw" or some other episode where someone introduced Chekov saying it was his first day, then we could pin it down exactly.

Did you actually think I wouldn't double check on the episode order and dialog?

This is a good one.

Geordi's wrong uniform in Yesterday's Enterprise
Continuity gaffs from set don’t mean much. It’s a TV show. Their hair changes shot to shot too.

Data using contractions
Another good one.

Spot, No. 2.

When Koenig starting playing Chekov on Star Trek is not relevant as to when Chekov joined the crew of the Enterprise.
Maybe. But wasn’t there some line about Chekov being new in maybe one of the briefing room scenes?

All we know is Chekov didn't not know Mudd, therefore he joined the crew after "Mudd's Women". If there was line in "Catspaw" or some other episode where someone introduced Chekov saying it was his first day, then we could pin it down exactly.
I’m not sure exactly to what you’re referring, but Chekov could have recognized Mudd from acquainting himself with his new posting or through friends telling tales of recent goings-on.

Did you actually think I wouldn't double check on the episode order and dialog?
No, I don’t do that. I don’t care about “winning” an internet argument.

Point is Chekov didn't recognize Mudd. So he was not part of that adventure, but since he did recognize Khan he was part of that adventure.

Not really about winning or losing. I just like research. Sometimes it means I "lose".

Nah it's "Starfleet class of '78".

There's no apostrophe in spoken language, Star Trek's valiant efforts at inserting some in every alien name notwithstanding. So it's just a class of 78.

Can't imagine a graduating class as small as 78 people

But since it's not the graduating class for any particular year, a million people might have graduated that year, in classes of manageable size.

(with no one watching the ceremony)

Huh?

or him using such sloppy language.

What's "sloppy" about it?

Besides, Data uses sloppy language whenever he wants. Just like he uses contractions. What he doesn't do is contradictions - he never claimed he wouldn't use contractions, say...
