Shame we still don't get to see the full authentic b/w print of The Cage :/

Surely the "authentic" version is off the 35mm color negative.

The b&w version was just Gene Roddenberry's cheaply made personal print, on 16mm film if I'm not mistaken. Corrections welcome, of course. And it got beat up from showings at the early conventions he took it to. So it was just a bad copy made worse for wear.

Anyway, Star Trek's production design and photography were done for color, with only a passing concern about how this or that would show up on b&w TVs. On the other hand, Lost in Space year 1 was built for b&w film, and the difference is amazing. Gene Polito's cinematography is gorgeous, luminous and dramatic, especially the earliest episodes.

I was referring to the fact that we have never had a release of the authentic product with the original Malachi Throne Keeper's voice and all music cues, pauses and the two lines that were deleted from any release. The colour trims combined with the body of The Cage from The Menagerie, has been adjusted, sound changed, and parts edited. As far as I'm aware, the only 'correct' and 'original' print is the b/w copy; granted it is a poor b/w print.

Well yeah, that could be interesting. You have a point. And apparently it's never coming out.

I was excited to first see the 1986 mixed b&w and color version on pay-per-view, and of course I home-taped it at the time. But that was a long time ago. Whenever the b&w scenes were cut in, it was like the lights going dim. Very weird.
