Original Series Bridge, No Emergency Exit ?

DumbDumb2007

Commander
Why was there no emergency exit on the Original Bridge ? If they had to escape from the bridge and the elevator did't work what would they do ?
Would part of the flooring pull up to reveal an escape hatch ? Would the elevator rotate 90 degrees to a service corridor encircling the Bridge ? Would there be a crawlway and even a bathroom there ?

I believe Franz Josef came up with the idea that one of the walls immediately next to the turbolift could be removed, revealing a staircase or ladder.

That's right. those walls were designated "kickout panels", implying you'd do exactly that if you needed out.

But on at least one occasion, they actually WERE trapped on the bridge when someone (Khan?) cut off the oxygen. Everyone ended up passing out or something, and then Khan locked Kirk up in the spin dryer.

Well the certainly does clear up why Kirk's uniform kept shrinking as the season progressed -- he'd been put through the dryer!

Most plans for the refit bridge have a hatch in front of the Helm/Nav station, Im sure in one of the old tech manuals they had serveral blow out walls and a stairwell near the front of the TOS bridge

Actually, Khan did say he "stopped up your exit routs" implying there was one or more? I prefer a Jeffries tube, possibly the one Sulu was in trying to restore power to the bridge in 'Day of the Dove'.

I just chuckle at the idea of people having to kick in the walls to leave the room in an emergency.
