Original Series Blu Ray - can someone distinguish this for me..

Harvest

Cadet
Newbie
So recently here in Canada I got a message telling me the Original Series blu rays have finally come down in price, still more expensive than the american price, but more realistic.

However, they seem to just be new added in items and the old expensive ones are still there...so..was wondering if anyone knew the difference between these blu rays?

Season 1: http://www.amazon.ca/Star-Trek-Original-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B001TH16DS/ref=pd_cp_d_3 more expensive

http://www.amazon.ca/Star-Trek-Complete-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B001TKNWXC/ref=pd_bxgy_d_img_c cheaper

Season 2: http://www.amazon.ca/Star-Trek-Original-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B002I9Z89Y/ref=pd_sim_d_3

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002JI94M6?tag=bluraycom0c-20 I noticed this one doesn't even have an image so..

Season 3: It looks like they only have the cheaper one.

So for the more expensive one, it says 7pc and WS (which I thought would be Wide Screen, but I don't think it is..)

Thanks for any help.

I guess that one is the US and the other is the Canadian release ... see the french writing on the cheaper one ...

Yes, I believe it is the Canadian vs. US release. I can say that TOS-R on bluray is worth the buy, for sure!

Also, the eps are presented in pillar box, menaing the aspect ratio is that of the standard 4x3 but your tv and bluray can be left at 16x9 to view it properly.

ah I see, I didn't see the french writing before.

and yes, I new about the 4:3 thing. Isn't that with all releases though?

Older material originally filmed in that aspect ratio, and now shown on Bluray is done in this manner. TV shows like TOS, the upcoming Twilight Zone sets, movies like The Wizard of Oz, are done like this, instead of chopping or stretching just to fit the screen.

I have the TOS Blu-ray box sets, and mercifully, the original 4:3 OAR has been unaltered. However, the new SFX have been rendered at 16:9, but cleverly framed so the pertinent areas of the shot still look right when cropped. TOS-R has been reformatted for 16:9 broadcast, and, as well as being broadcast in Japan, has just finished a run on CBS Action here in the UK. I tuned into a couple of episodes out of curiosity, and well... it was bloody awful. Trust me, it's downright claustrophobic, and although "smart cropping" has been employed - it just doesn't work. A travesty of the beautiful work the original directors and DoP's so lovingly crafted.
