Original Enterprise design size... 180 feet?!

We sort of got that in DS9: the central cast was minimal, the extras were (mostly) foreign aliens whose loyalties the heroes could not be certain about, and the "scoutship set" confined the heroes for just long enough to serve the adventure plot but not long enough to call for either the toilet scene or the explanation as to why there is no toilet scene...

I'm wondering if, even with a tiny ship and limited crew, if Majel Barrett would still have been shoe-horned into the cast?

Here is a link with one of the very early and very small Enterprise visions (there's even a cutaway!): http://ottens.co.uk/forgottentrek/designing-the-first-enterprise/

Hope you like it!

We saw that cone (wider at the top than bottom) in one of Wayne Barlowe's books--EXPEDITION

I love that Expedition book! It was also the inspiration for a program made by the Discovery Channel. Though the TV version went in a different direction, exploring the planet via robotic probes, rather than a manned joint human-yma expedition.

Regarding the design you mean, I don't think there was any influence of Jefferies design there. The Barlowe one is smaller and totally lacks the saucer part.
