Original Bionic Woman DVDs announced for R1 (but possible bad news)

Good news and bad news for people waiting for the long-delayed (as in by decades) home video release of the original Bionic Woman to DVD (last time I wrote a thread about this some anal-retentive gave me grief for not using "The" in the title - I'll just say "get a life :p" in advance).

The good news is TV Shows on DVD reports Universal has officially announced October 19 as the release date for Season 1! As someone who has been waiting for either Bionic Woman or Six Million Dollar Man to be made available over here (legally) since the early 1980s, this is great. Also good news is that unlike other Universal releases that have been bare bones, at least one commentary by Kenneth Johnson has been confirmed and other extras are likely.

The bad news - and this is VERY bad news if true - is according to the announcement they plan to do the same bulls*it they did with Kung Fu and will be cropping the show to a widescreen format. I thought they'd learned their lesson with the negative response to the Kung Fu release and the fact no one else is doing this with older shows. Hell, both Star Trek and the original 1960's Prisoner were kept to their original aspect ratios for Blu-Ray and if any release would have been changed, it would have been TOS Remastered.

Sadly it also seems Universal has decided not to go with the "both series, complete" release that had been mentioned earlier. What that means when they get to the crossover episodes, especially the Kill Oscar trilogy, is anyone's guess. I'm also a little concerned because there's no guarantee we'll get the other seasons (ask anyone who has been waiting for Kojak season 2, for example). Apparently Time-Life is still planning its own release of the Six Million Dollar Man, too. Hopefully they'll have the sense to leave the aspect ratio alone.

TV Shows on DVD has said they'll be looking into the aspect ratio issue. It's a subsidiary of TV Guide so it carries a bit of weight, though with October only a few months away, if Universal has remastered the episodes by cropping I can't see them having the time or budget to undo that. The hope right now is that this was a simple typo and Universal isn't going to be that stupid.

Ya know, I never noticed if Kung Fu was cropped to widescreen. Gotta dig it out and see.

I agree shows and films should be released in their original formats.

Is it really necessary to default to personal attack and insult in response to a simple difference of perspective? Is there any possible value in choosing to be so hurtful to another human being over something that you have no personal stake in? My point, which I already explained at the time and which you have clearly chosen to ignore, was that a lot of us who are fans of the original The Bionic Woman were extremely disappointed by the remake called simply Bionic Woman, and thus would want to make the distinction between the two as clear as possible rather than risk seeing the original mistaken for its inadequate reboot. The news of a release of the original series is a good thing, and it seems worthwhile to make it very clear that it is the original series and not the remake that's being talked about. Even if you don't perceive the importance of that distinction the same way I do, that doesn't give you the right to sink to childish namecalling and personal denigration just because I have a different perspective from yours. The only person here trying to "give grief" to another poster is you. I didn't wish you any personal emotional harm when I asked for a simple clarification, but you evidently do wish to hurt my feelings -- and have succeeded -- simply because you don't see the same priorities I do. And there's simply no excuse for such casual hurtfulness. So don't claim you're the wronged party here.

To be honest I don't really have a problem with the widescreen cropping. Yeah for certain classic, iconic movies I wouldn't want them to mess with the aspect ratio, but for old TV shows I don't really see what the big deal is.

I see reruns of Seinfeld being shown in widescreen now, and frankly I think it looks really GOOD that way. I'd love to see TOS in that format too someday.

I mean, come on, these aren't exactly Stanley Kubrick movies where every detail on screen matters to the story. lol

No, but cropping still cuts out parts of the picture that was carefully framed by a skilled and experienced director to show exactly what he wanted to show. I don't think anybody has the moral authority to arbitrarily allow a machine to randomly redesign a person's work.

As Christopher - whom I have no beef with and I have no recollection of who had made the original point so could have stayed anonymous - has chosen to prove my point, I don't really see a need to respond.

Instead, I will post news of interest to the 99.99999% of the other people and that is TV Shows on DVD has confirmed that not only was that indeed an error -- that BW will be released in its proper aspect ratio -- but the set will include a documentary called Bionic Beginnings AND three bonus episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man! These episodes are, naturally, the original two-parter and part 1 of Welcome Home Jaime which was originally an SMDM episode. So that probably gives a good indication as to how Kill Oscar will be handled when they get to it. It looks like the SMDM episodes will also remain in their original SMDM sets as well, which is cool, especially for those who aren't interested in getting both shows.

I was hoping the aspect ratio thing was an error! Now all we need is a timeline for the SMDM sets and the rest of BW and we'll be laughing. As long as they don't take several years to put them out the way they spelled out Mission Impossible, I'm happy.

Some of you people act like 12 year olds after Justin Bieber has been insulted.

Ah, I remember the good old days when studios just released horrible 4:3 versions - idiotically labeled as "Full Screen" - of films and TV shows. Now it's all come full circle.

Re: Original Bionic Woman DVDs announced for R1 (but possible bad news

It makes no sense to me that they release 30 year old TV shows one season at a time.

Especially (no offense, I watched BW during first run) somewhat less popular shows and especially a show that ran only 3 seasons.

I can understand Dallas or MASH, both of which ran many seasons.

TVShowsOnDVD.com

Now we have some additional updates for you! First, the aspect ratio: in our report this morning we told you that Universal's information mentioned that the video for this title would be formatted as "Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1)". This would not be the original broadcast picture format, so we expressed concern about that in our story, and got in touch with the studio just as soon as we could. This afternoon we received a response from one of Universal's executives, who researched it and informed us that the DVD release of The Bionic Woman - Season 1 will indeed be in the original aspect ratio of the network broadcasts: 1.33:1 "full screen". We also have it on excellent authority that the soon-to-be announced Six Million Dollar Man DVD releases will also be in the original full frame video format. GREAT to hear!

The original announcement's info about "English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround" audio was a bit fishy-sounding as well, so we doubled-checked that with Universal, too. They told us that the correct audio info is Dolby Digital 2.0, so please note that as well.

While we waited for that info, Universal also updated retailers with information about the contents. Fans will be VERY pleased to hear this tidbit, an exact quote from the studio's material: "Includes 3 episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man, featuring the origins of the Bionic Woman, and a never-before-seen Bionic Beginnings Featurette.". Yes, this means that Universal's Bionic Woman set will include the Six Million Dollar Man crossover episodes "The Bionic Woman, Parts 1 and 2", "The Return of the Bionic Woman, Parts 1 and 2", and "Welcome Home, Jaime, Part 1" (almost always syndicated as a BW episode, but originally aired as a SMDM episode with "Part 2" originally airing as a BW episode).

Re: Original Bionic Woman DVDs announced for R1 (but possible bad news

I'm lookin' at some screen grabs I did from my Kung Fu disks and, well, they're definitely 4:3.

Re: Original Bionic Woman DVDs announced for R1 (but possible bad news

They really gotta drop that "full screen" wording these days. It's funny though that a lot of people seem OK with old material being made widescreen on TBS etc despite it looking off a lot of times. Even HBO sometimes shows movies that were 2.35:1 as 1:85 which isn't as egregious but still.

I heard it was only the first season and maybe they corrected it in later pressings due to its unpopularity?

Re: Original Bionic Woman DVDs announced for R1 (but possible bad news

Studios should realize any widescreen tv can allow the consumer THE CHOICE of watching their program in the original 4:3 ratio or zooming to a widescreen ratio. We don't need someone to make this decision for us. This way everyone gets what they want--except maybe people that still have 4:3 sets which I don't think the studios are concerned with that demographic.
