Original animated version of G.I. Joe the definitve version?

With the Shout Factory releasing the original G.I. Joe animated series; I have to say I love the original the most. Hollywood can make all the G.I. Joe sequels it wants. I still have an admiration for the original 80's show.

Anyone out there see the live action movie? How did it compare to it's translation to the animated series?

The 80's animated show had an innocent quality the live action movie never had. :vulcan:

I never saw the new movie. It looked pretty bad, and I skipped it. I haven't even caught it on netflix.

I liked the cartoon as a kid, although it was my brother that bought the toys and was really into it. I was more of a Real Ghostbusters kinda guy. Regardless, the new movie reminded me of my bad experience with Transformers, and I've stayed far away. Did I miss anything?

Sneak Peek from my upcoming Cartoon review article series:

GI Joe: A Real American Hero – Forget Serpentor and Sgt. Slaughter! The original 1983 ‘MASS Device’ miniseries, ‘The Weather Dominator’ 5 show follow up, and the first full-length, 55 episode season with Duke, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Flint, Lady Jaye, Shipwreck, and the rest of the Joes is where it’s at! You know you know the words to the theme song. <Insert singing here!> You know you remember episodes like ‘Excalibur’, ‘The Traitor’ and ‘There’s No Place Like Springfield.’ And you know you know that knowing is half the battle! Even if Cobra, Destro, the Baroness, and Zartan are always so dang incompetent, they still live to torment the Joes another day, and everyone always parachutes out just in time and no one dies ever. How cool is that?

:)

I don't know why they bother with the remakes. I'd like to see The Hub's ratings numbers for old GI Joe versus the new Renegades cartoon. New He-Man stuff fell off, too. There are rumors Hasbro is doing a new Jem, but again I'd like to see the ratings of the old one.

I used to watch it every morning when I was growing up. The show was a cut-above. The movies were fantastic. As for Rise of the Cobra, it was too flashy with too much action for my taste. The animated series usually had better bad guys than we saw in that movie. I hear another one is due out soon.

I watched enough of the show back in the day to be utterly pissed that they changed Cobra Commander's costume, so I didn't see the movie.

Of course, their reason for changing it pissed me off even more. They said they couldn't have him wear a hood over his head because it would make him look a KKK member. Correct me if I'm wrong here - but wouldn't have your VILLAIN looking like a klansman make him look all the more VILLAINOUS?!

The original Marvel comics series written by Larry Hama was the most compelling Joe for me, story wise. Although, later in its run, it lost me (Not too long before cancellation.)

The Devils' Due comics that came out some years back held my nostalgia for a handful of months. But it wasn't very good.

The Sunbow cartoon was was entertaining. The follow up that DiC did was just unwatchable for me.

The DVD specials that came with the toys were like Valor vs Venom just weren't for me.

Sigma 6 had some great design work, but the execution of the stories was just too cutesie poo.

Resolute was pretty good for a one off special. Nice designs and character models. Considering it was really just a series of short vignettes, I was surprised how much i liked it.

The movie was a god awful piece of garbage, but it produced a lot of neat toys. It was kind of cool seeing kids walk around in Snake Eyes T-shirts. Saying it was Team America minus the irony is actually too generous in my book.

Renegades I found to be an engaging reboot. Too bad it's cancelled.

The comics were the definite version since they were written by the man who created many of the concepts, Larry Hama.

The action figure from the 1960s is the definitive version.

Only with the fuzzy hair.
