Orci talks about Star Trek 3

I could easily see Spock and Uhura facing bigotry for their relationship. Spock, even as a hybrid, is one of the few Vulcans alive, and he's choosing a relationship with a human woman instead of having children with a Vulcan woman.
It's interesting, the points about Uhura and the inter racial relationship. I recently watched the Rosemary's Baby remake starring Saldana, and her character in that movie had a white husband. It's still surprising and refreshing, to me anyways, to see high profile interracial relationships in media.

I didn't see Into Darkness until this past weekend, and I was really surprised how much has been devoted to the forums here over the past year, that in the film were only on screen for perhaps two seconds. It was not nearly as bad as posts here on the board had led me to believe.

That's us fans for you ;)

Well yeah, but I mean the big Carol Marcus underwear scene is just the same frame that shows up everywhere, and she's not even moving in the shot. It's two seconds that can be cut to make room for a commercial.

Yep. I wonder if that scene will end up trimmed if and when STID makes its way to network television. Does that even happen anymore???

Had they not filmed that scene, I wonder what we would have been talking about instead. Most likely that much more Cumber-Khan.

"Hmm, they're guessing this Khan secret too fast. Better toss 'em a pic of a girl in her underwear."

Just to throw this in for what it's worth, the percentage of inter-racial marriages in the U.S. is going up. Inter-racial marriages make up 15 percent of all new marriages, now, compared to just under 7 percent in 1980. The Pew Research Center did a survey about inter-racial marriage in 2011 where it asked what effect people thought this trend had on society. Forty-four percent said it made no difference. Forty-three percent said it was a change for the better. Only 11 percent said it was a change for the worse. (Survey size = 2003. Margin of error roughly +/- 3 percentage points.)

Hell, Hotwire even has an ad with a gay couple who have a child, now.

The Spock and Uhura relationship may not be passé, but they're not breaking any new ground or making a statement about anything, either. I glanced at a site that listed over twenty TV shows on the air today that feature inter-racial couples as regular characters.

I believe what Malikia is saying is that there is still racism in america for interracial couples. I am sure they are people who do not want their children to intermarry even in year 2014.

I find your statistic fascinating. I had no idea interracial relationships where that high. they are 3x higher than same sex relationships. which does not seem balance in the way Hollywood portrays the two because in Hollywood there are not a lot of interracial couples in their films and tv.they only appear sometimes. whereas every Hollywood show must have a gay couple.

In 2013, EW reported that there were 46 gay couples on tv. the same group could not even count up to 20 stable interracial couples on tv. So there is still more to be done in making a public awareness of interracial marriages and dating.

So gay people can only marry people of the same color?

This is evidence of nothing. It isn't Hollywood's job to promote awareness or educate. Strait, white married couples are boring.

Yes we are. On the other hand, TV's approach to 'laugh at the gay jokes' more than border on the offensive sometimes.

Orci says Kirk was born on Earth... except in the opening of the 2009 movie they show him being born in space. Did he forget? Or was he remembering TVH when Kirk says "No, I was born in Iowa, I only work in outer space."

And he thinks it took two entire movies to establish the characters enough before they could be out in space?! In Star Trek?!

And what are these "things" he refers to that make "it" accessible to a "general audience"? My guess is that's bar fights and boobies. Don't worry, they won't make you think - maybe Michael Bay can direct the next one.

Guy makes so many guffaws in such a short span of words, I'm not confident.

Considering he is a human being, just like you and me and everyone else here posting, I'm sure it's safe to assume that he slipped up. It's really okay, I promise. :techman: #breakingnews

Of course it doesn't help your point if you're half putting words in his mouth.

To me, that is the more frustrating part. People get mad at Abrams for changing things to Trek and then get annoyed that he takes the inspiration from TOS, which could be just as gratuitous (see any interview with the costume designer from TOS) and but TOS gets a pass. Abrams does not.

It was dumb scene, they have apologized for it, and in the grand scheme of Trek, it is hardly the most offensive.

I don't think JJ "takes inspiration from TOS". It was just done to appeal to the lowest common denominator regardless of whether any other Trek did it before or not.

For the record, people do NOT give non-JJ Trek a free pass. I'm sure there are countless posts on TrekBBS bemoaning Nichelle Nichols embarrassing striptease in Star Trek V, which was a double-whammy because it was not only sexist but it only highlighted the fact that poor Nichelle was way past the age and physical condition in which she could reasonably pass as a sex-object.

There are probably an equal amount of postings bemoaning the infamous T'Pol decontamination rub-downs in Enterprise or the 7 of 9 catsuit.

Intersting how you mention 'sexism' and 'age.';)

One of the problems facing women in the film industry - particularly Hollywood - is that their age is a designation on whether or not they can be considered a 'sex symbol.'

I watched Star Trek VI about two days ago and thought Nichelle Nichols was a pretty woman - who never shied away from the skirts and boots uniform in the movies. And, today, she looks like a dignified, and lovely woman.

Male performers in their late 30s or in their 40s, 50s, and 60s are considered older, but they still are able to play opposite actresses years younger. And, they are still able to play badasses (e.g. "The Expendables" series, Danny Trejo - who was opposite a very young South African hottie in "Death Race 3").

While I don't think Uhura's fan-dance was 'Oh, my f-king God! My life is over now that I've witnessed that scene!' I think it should have fit in with the character we've known for years or at least actually had a reason to be in the movie other than 'Uhura is a lovely woman.' This goes in hand with the Scotty/Uhura scene, as well as Scotty's head vs. the bulkhead scene and so forth.
