Orci: Four characters who won't be in XII (and more)

I don't expect to be lied to, but then, this is Hollywood, Land of Lies, and lying in bed with.

Er, even if they are tricking us, why is that a bad thing? It's not like they're testifying under oath to Congress about a matter of national security. They're just teasing us about the plot of a science fiction movie--and trying to avoid giving away the whole thing a year before the movie opens.

I'll bet that when THE SIXTH SENSE was in production, Bruce Willis didn't go around telling everyone that he was playing a ghost. And that Agatha Christie didn't blab about the plots of her mysteries a year before they were published. "Well, it's possible that there's more than one killer on the Orient Express . . . ."

Their job is to trick and misdirect us so we'll be surprised when the movie comes out. That's not lying, it's showmanship.

At this point in time, there's absolutely no reason why they need to tell us anything!

(Heck, I still haven't seen JOHN CARTER yet. I'll worry about ST XII next year!)

^It is lying, something that's sadly being promoted as a way of life, and it is Hollywood. And Hollywood is what the rest of the world bases the US on.

Nah, it's just teasing and tricking the audience about something that, ultimately, is all in good fun.

Is a magician "lying" when he pulls a rabbit out of a hat? Is an actor "lying" when he changes his name from Archibald Leach to "Cary Grant"? It's just show biz and ballyhoo. About imaginary, non-existent characters, to boot.

Directors, writers, actors, and what-not are under no obligation to be totally honest and transparent about works-in-progress. And, I'm sorry, I just can't get morally indignant about "lies" regarding the plot of an upcoming sci-fi movie. This is supposed to be fun, remember?

Again, this isn't a witness or politician or cheating husband lying about real events. It's making stuff up about made-up people, for the purposes of entertainment.

It's all just smoke and mirrors anyway. Just ask P.T. Barnum.

Then the rest of the world is composed of complete and utter idiots. Why worry about what they think about anything?

This kind of "lying" is also known as an internet PR campaign. Nothing unusual or particularly scurrilous about it.

Exactly. I'm not sure when teasing an upcoming movie became a matter of serious moral consequence! :)

On the behalf on the rest of the world, I can testify that Hollywood is definitively not what we base the US on.

McDonald's, on the other hand... :p

I would also suggest that there's an episode of "The Simpsons" to cover just about any point of worldly discussion. It seemed that way in the early 90s - and there have been many more seasons since then.

And "Doonesbury."

Technically, Abrams and his Cohorts haven't lied about anything, since all they have said is who won't be in the movie.

The original claim that Khan is going to be in the movie came from an unnamed insider who reported to AICN or Trekmovie or someone.

It was Simon Pegg who said Cumberbatch isn't playing Khan.

Abrams and Cohorts gave us a list of characters who won't be in the movie.

No one has actually lied yet. We have a bunch of meaningless double talk, but no lies.
