Orci: Four characters who won't be in XII (and more)

I don't see Khan's picture up there. :shifty:
True. I didn't expect Gary Mitchell in the movie because he was killed off in the comics. Ruk is reminiscent of those ape things in the 4th issue of the comic book tie in, where Abrams said the clue, thematic foreshadowing lies. I never even entertained the idea of Charlie, and the Borg would be way to soon, anyway. And why use Rand in the comic book if she's not in the film? That one, I don't understand.

Rand was only used in The Galileo Seven adapatation, and that was meant more as a nod toward the fact that she was supposed to be in the original episode until it got re-written.

And besides, not everything in the comics is meant to be setting up for Trek XII. Abrams and his Cohorts have said there will be hints about XII in the comics, but that doesn't mean that someone we see in the comic will be in the movie. For example, the comics have taken Yeoman Zahra from Operation Annhilate and made her a recurring character. But don't be surprised if Zahra is not in the movie.

Khan's picture isn't listed and one would expect if he's not going to be in the film, it would be there, to squash that rumor for good. Have we been lied to? What else are they telling us that isn't true? That it's going to be an exciting movie, and we're going to be satisfied at the end? What did Pine say, it was going to be "character driven drama?" It's sounding like character driven drivel.

I'm really bummed now. First, they canceled the trailer for SDCC and now we find out that the rumor about Khan they said wasn't true, most likely is.

This is a list of five characters who will not be in the movie. That is not the same as "everyone not pictured here will be in the movie." There's no Matt Decker on that list, does that mean he's going to be in the movie.

I guess now we know we can't believe Abrams and company, and I had such faith in him.

No offense, but were you expecting? This is standard fare for Abrams and his Cohorts. Misdirection, meaningless double-talk which says nothing, proffesional-sounding nonsense and even direct lies have been part of these guys' interviews since Lost, and their Trek XI buzz was no different.

These guys know that they have fans who cling to every word they say and so they'll give an interview which actually says nothing knowing it will drive the Interent crazy.

I don't expect to be lied to, but then, this is Hollywood, Land of Lies, and lying in bed with.

Rand was only used in The Galileo Seven adapatation, and that was meant more as a nod toward the fact that she was supposed to be in the original episode until it got re-written.

I don't remember reading that anywhere. When did Orci say this? What are those comics for then. Time to stop wasting money, I guess. And no, some fans don't hang on every word.

Was Orci even asked about Khan in that interview? Exactly what lie has anyone at Bad Robot told fans? They've withheld information, but they have never outright lied. And the comics are for those who want more stories set in that universe, just like the novels are. . . and to give hints at what the characterization in the new movies will be. . . for instance I'm guessing that the Spock/Uhura subplot in the movie will involve the fact that she feels that Spock is taking irrational risks (which is an ongoing thread in the comics). . .

Yes, this would have been a perfect opportunity to announce that Khan is not in the movie.

After all, if that had been the intent of Abrams's statement months ago that Del Toro wasn't playing Khan - to deny that Khan is in the film, rather than misdirect - this would have been a chance to clarify that.

;)
That would assume they actually wanted to clarify it, even if Khan is NOT in it.

I don't think they care that (10 months prior to the film opening) people think that it could still be about Khan. In fact they probably like it that people are debating the topic. Perhaps they WANT the whole "is Khan in this or not?" discussion; perhaps they even intentionally and covertly encouraged this debate.

Rand has actually appeared in most of the comics in a very minor capacity, little more than a redshirt alongside (former Yeoman in TOS) Lt Zahra. Her character was originally intended to be in both Galileo 7 and City of the Edge of Forever but her part was given over to other characters when the actress was let go partway through season one. She was also in an early draft of the Trouble with Tribbles.

I'd like them to do more with her character but in the short term it seems very unlikely, especially if they have decided to leave her out of the sequel.

Of course, one could always query the interpretation of the phrase "next Star Trek movie" compared to "the 2013 Trek movie." I mean, since they've already completed principal photography and are in post in what is the current movie, technically you could take "next movie" to mean JJTrek 3...

I don't expect to be lied to,

And what lie are you being told, exactly?

The Khan thing was a rumor, and as far as we know, it's still just a rumor. We have no idea whether he'll be in the movie or not, and according to this article, he's still just as likely to be in it (or not in it) as he was before.

And frankly my dears, did anyone expect the Borg?

I think they're coming in the last film that Bad Robot does.

I was expecting a TOS episode remake, similar to this:

Now THAT'S a bad robot.

New timeline.
Since the next movie is supposed to take up not long after the first, (or did they lie about that) I give it a couple of years. Maybe the next movie.

I had heard about the other episodes but I didn't know about City on the Edge of Forever. It seems they will probably kill her off in one of the comics to come. So much for strong women in the movie. Guess we got one, was it too much to ask for a couple more against a mostly male cast?
