So. I've never had or used a smartphone before, but I am now seriously considering buying one. I would like your useful opinions on what I should get. Opinions on both the phone itself and the operating systems will be helpful.
I'll start by saying that I will be with AT&T, and I really REALLY want the phone to have an actual keyboard, preferably one that slides out. I'm also a fairly tech savvy person who picks up on new technology quickly, so don't think that because I've never had a smartphone before I need something simple to start with.
I am leaning towards an Android phone, but will also consider just about anything except the iPhone. I know, it's the best thing ever, but it just doesn't fit me or what I'd like to use my phone for. The reason I'm leaning towards Android is because I use many Google products (Gmail, Google Maps, etc.) and I have heard there are lots of customization options.
What do you all suggest? What has worked best for you?

As any of you who might be my friends on FaceBook will attest, I pretty much went kicking and screaming to the iPhone, but it does have its benefits, as well as its limitations, especially if you are interested in any kind of customization beyond the most basic.
