Opinions of Romulan Warbirds on TNG/DS9

Aesthetically speaking, one of the best designs in Trek. From a military standpoint it looked very vulnerable to attack. The long neck w/the bridge standing out was an open target for an enemy assault.

The Warbirds never impressed me much in battle. Perhaps held back by script.

Yeah, much safer to put them on the very pinnacle of saucers like Starfleet does eh?

Where did I say anything about SF ships? Wow.

I for one like the excessively showy nature of the "foreign exchange vessels" of the Romulan Star Empire. Were I from an isolationist culture bent on future world domination, I'd sure only go abroad in impressive juggernauts like that.

Whenever the TNG era Warbird made an appearance, it was a decisive one, and usually a single vessel was a credible threat and two would have been deliberate overkill. Which is why the ending of "The Defector" works so nicely...

In open battle in the Dominion War, though, I would have expected the Romulans to field all their lesser (or at least less glamorous) ship types as well. And I would have hoped to see more destruction unleashed by the show-off Warbirds. Although destroying an entire planetary surface in "The Die is Cast" sure looked cool!

I loved the warbirds-wish they had made it into the TNG films. I think they were held back not so much by script, but by budget. I also wish they had developed different types of Romulan warcraft instead of just relying on the warbirds.

Romulan warbirds are total baller rides.

I think Romulans are basically repressed boy-racers; think of the big decal on the TOS version. And the TNG warbirds are like a giant pimp-my-ride ship with that oversized bodykit nose and spoilerrific wings... ;)

I don't know, they looked very thickly constructed, and didn't seem to have as many weak points as Starfleet ships.

I liked seeing the Warbirds in action in DS9. I also liked the new warbirds in Nemesis, although I wish they'd appeared alongside the old ones.

When you lose your shields, thick neck and bridge burried deep inside the hull won't help you - unless the script is on your side. You're dealing with mega or gigaton weapons, not 18 inch shells. In this context, having a bridge on top makes sense as you can use it as a lifeboat. I think TNG manual does state that the bridge can be used in this way. There must be some reason why Starfleet, Klingons, and Romulans all use them this way. Perphaps the Romulan bridge can cloak after ejecting.

It's a top, top design in my mind. I even like the antiquated looking interior of the Warbird.
