Only God Forgives

Konata Izumi

Commander
Red Shirt
Uber-cool Nicholas Winding Refn/Ryan Gosling movie, about killing people in Thailand. Came out in cinemas here today, don't know where else, but seems to be a bit later in most countries.

Common complaints are that it's too violent (), unemotional, aimless and pointless. Imagery is universally praised, but many dislike the minimalism of the characterisation and plot. People turn their heads very slowly and ominously, not much dialogue, and then someone dies. Some weird, twisted details. A weird story.

It was very surreal, slow but wild, and kind of tranquil. Even though the story's evident deep meaning is a mystery, I found the minimalistic vision, of violent passion and a bit of family dynamics, emotionally resonant. It would fall apart if not for the divine aesthetics, and flawless pacing and editing - it is slow, but in perfect balance, and even, unlike Drive.

Re-watch with deep meaning uncovered.

It's about responsibility for family, and the suspense when it seems to go wrong. I like how it starts as a revenge story, but ends with self-atonement. Then there's the uneasiness and the relief of bowing down to a "god" of questionable morality. Ryan Gosling's more of the submissive type in this movie.

It will be recognised as a classic in time.
