"Only Fools..." prequel announced

I've recently been watching the whole show through, it has brought back a lot of memories of the 80s and 90s.

I must say, I don't find it as hilarious as I used to, some of the humour seems a little middle aged, it's often very slapstick, and some of it seems extremely crass. But it is of its time.

As a dramedy though it's really quite effective, it's very well observed and David Jason's performance is much more involved than I remembered it being. It can be quite a touching show in some ways.

Never was a big fan of it, but of course I used to watch it, don't have a strong attachment to it though. I should watch it again though.

So did anyone watch it? It really wasn't at all what I expected. More a drama than a comedy I thought, and surprisingly dark too. Some of the humour fell flat but I'm not entirely sure if that was deliberate or not given the tone of it.

I'd certainly watch again if it went to series.

I thought it was pretty good, overall. The problem was that the Beeb/media plugged it as more Del-based than it turned out to be - but as it turned out, that was no bad thing as the actor was nothing like him in looks, voice or tone. Good actor, though.

As a drama mainly about Del's mum and Rodney's dad I thought it was quite good.

For something that's been in the works, on and off, for the last seven years, I thought it was quite good. The production design was absolutely outstanding and the young actors were very good. I couldn't accept all of the actors in their roles (come on, Phil Daniels as Grandad? Even with the moustache and pork pie hat, he still looked like Phil Daniels with a moustache and pork pie hat) but most of them fit quite well.

Nicholas Lyndhurst as Freddy the Frog didn't quite work for me. Freddy was implied in the series to be a bit tougher than Lyndhurst portrayed him. It seemed to me that he was mixing Gary Sparrow and Boycie (with a silly moustache of course). And for someone who's spent the last five years churning out The Green Green Grass (not to mention those last three appalling OFAH specials), John Sullivan's script was very good, with the right balance of humour and drama.

I hope a series follows this special, but wouldn't want to see 90 minute episodes. Maybe 6 x 60 minutes.
