I wasn't sure what to expect, but I thought the premiere was quite funny. I was impressed by how far they went with the whole studio set-up. It looks just like CNN, only twisted the Onion Way.

I don't want to spoil it for anyone who still has it on their TiVo, but I will say that North Korea's "Nukes for Batman" is the story of the year so far...

If you like the Onion (or just enjoy silly news satire) I'd say check this out on IFC.

:techman:

I usually enjoy the Onion online clips, but this was just too painful to watch. They just kept rushing from joke to joke without any breathing room. I couldn't sit through the whole thing.

Well, to each his/her own. I thought for the most part it was great. A couple of segments were weak. But the frenetic pace is supposed to mirror CNN/Fox/MSNBC. All the high tech bullshit, and breath-y dramatics combined with over-the-top self-importance. I guess it's just my style of humor (such as it is).

I mean...the Secretary of Health and Human Services press conference?

"Come on, America. Just eat a goddamned vegetable now and then. Jesus Christ!"

That tickled me.

Where/when is this on?

Friday nights on IFC.

I thought it was funny at times but overall I think what they did so well in "print" didn't translate well to TV. Their best stuff was always pretty dry and sparse and you could fill in the blanks yourself. This seemed almost like overkill by comparison.

"Portlandia" also had some funny stuff but I don't really see the concept stretching into something long-lasting.

I've about written IFC off, anyway, since they got rid of samurai movies on Saturday, started showing crappier movies and putting commercial breaks in them.

I thought it was pretty good. Why the hell didn't this get to Comedy Central and instead they get the Sports version?

I liked this channel more when it was called by it's former name... Fox News Channel. ;)

Come on! Someone had to do that joke!

I think IFC plays Freaks and Geeks and Firefly, so it can't be a horrible channel.

I enjoyed the episode that I saw. I really got a laugh when they would rip anyone criticizing one of their stories. They tear into a history teacher that corrected them on an Alamo story revealing that she is often called ugly and being cheated on by her husband.

I'm not a big sports fan but the Sports version is pretty funny too. Last night's episode had them excitedly following a boxing match in the hopes that one of the boxers would die in the ring, showing computer graphics of the brain damage he was receiving with each blow

I usually enjoy many of The Onion's news articles and news clips as they can nicely hit "the pulse" of the absurdity of culture or some political issue or the media itself but I think the "TV series" missed that beat a bit.

I just watched a TiFaux'd episode of it from a few nights ago (a repeat of last week's episode) and it was funny but I think there were too many "call backs" to a played joke (notably Biden's "record" and the kidnapped, "pretty" correspondent). Some points were funny like the (over) use of the touch screen and the "local news segment" but at times it seemed like it was either trying to hard, didn't have enough material to work on or both.

I'll keep giving it a watch, however. I also how long the "material" can sustain the show. They're obviously poking fun of how absurd the media has gotten on both the national and local levels but how long can they sustain this "idea" when they're just making shit up? It's one thing to do it on a website it's a whole other to do it on a weekly cable TV series.

I also, sadly enough, wonder how many people will tune into this and think that -like the daily show- it's presenting real news stories in a satirical or mocking manner (sort of like The Daily Show.) Obviously some of the stuff is too broad to take seriously (like the Terminator/Tom Cruise stuff) but there's enough stupid people out there that it's likely some may construe this as "real news."

Last night's episode was also funny. My favorite bit was the mass evacuation and snow plow army mobiliized because New Orleans got a light sprinkle of snow

This running bit about Suri Cruise being the future overlord of Earth and time travelers coming back in time to kill her is a bit odd, though. Sure it's funny but it ruins the pretense of realism that the rest of the show adheres to.

The best thing about this show is, that the blond news anchor actually used to be a real news anchor at Fox fucking News.
