One way to have improved Superman IV

It is so depressing that the Reeve superman franchise turned into this. The first two films are near perfect.

Donner really held it together, and when he was gone....poof

Agreed. It's really obvious that without Donner, the Superman movies would have been nothing BUT a bunch of slapsticky cheesefests.

He and Mankiewitz were the only ones who really tried to take this world seriously.

I don't really remember Superman III that much...saw it when I was a kid when I didn't know who Richard Pryor was and thought it sucked then. Don't think I've seen it since.

The moon battle instead would of been between superman and lex luther, with lex dying in seconds in the vacume

Bad as it is, I do sort of prefer it to III, because at least it tries to take Superman seriously. There are nods to the first 2 movies in the Smallville sequences and Lois is given something to do. III is primarily a Richard Pryor vehicle and an outlet for Lester's penchant for slapstick. The action sequences in III are inevitably much better, because at least it had a decent budget. But it's silly and sneering - for my money, IV's heart is in the right place.

While a painful movie to watch, I enjoy it right up until after Superman gives his speech to the United Nations. Except for him kissing Lois' memory away, I really enjoy Clark going to Lois for advice on what to do. Gene Hackman is wasted in this film as strictly comic relief and Nuclear Man was a terrible idea.

I still get a thrill when the Superman music is playing as Superman enters the UN and all the nations stand up to serve as his sponsor. While a noble concept of an idea (Superman getting rid of nuclear weapons), the movie is hurt by a terrible script and crummy special effects.
