Agree. I've always thought Troi should've been a First Contact specialist and advisor to Captain Picard rather than the ship's psychologist.
It was the 80s.
A rare case of an engineer being able to be promoted without going into a distinct management position.
To be completely fair, there are times when Troi performs that role anyway. Eg with the Jaradan in "The Big Goodbye". So, 'first contact and advisor to Picard' appears to be a part of her duties, it's just not her only role.
Oh for sure. But I felt it should be her primary duty, because the writers seldom knew what to do with Troi as a psychologist. Hence, why she almost got dropped from the show in the first season.
I forgot until recently that she's doing much the same thing when Insurrection begins. She kind of seems to be a sort of 'personal assistant' for Picard when it comes to first contact situations, advising and coralling him diplomatically.
I agree those kinds of ambassadorial skills kind of don't tie in perfectly to her 'day job'. But then, we might assume that Deanna is skilled in many disciplines, which is why she is kept in the 'command circle' on the bridge. We just don't get to see her practicing those skills as often as maybe we should have.
EDIT: Worth noting that in Riker's false future we see in "Future Imperfect", Deanna was *still* by Picard's side and doing many of the same kinds of things, presumably.
