I wonder if it was possible just by getting away from their planet like Kes did and the other Ocampa did was enough to start prolonging their lives. I always assumed that the Caretaker might have been putting something in their food and water. Maybe it would take several generations to prolong their life spans quite a bit.

Or it could have been something more technological in nature. For anyone who had watched Stargate SG1, remember that one planet they found where the people only lived 100 days. A child born one day was a toddler the next. It was some kind Goa'uld signal that when shut off would no longer affect them.

Well, now Kim's ahead of Kes by one vote and Chakotay by two.

Maybe TPTB should have stuck to their initial instincts.

I totally agree with you here!

Now that would have been a terrible insult to Jennifer Lien, even worse than the original firing was.

And a downright insult to the Kes/Lien fans too.
It's not my most favorite idea either but it would allow the original actress to stay apart of the show and not having Jeri Ryan playing a Borg I think would have helped preserve the Borg as a dangerous threat and maybe they wouldn't have been overused. At the very least it would have mean we didn't get "Fury."

Well, the point is that I don't want to have the original actress stay apart of the show because I think that she did an excellent work in portraying Kes and I can't imagine anyone else in that role.
OK, we would have got "Fury" but I must say that I don't think that this suggestion is any better.
Doing such a move just to have Ryan in the show wouldn't have been good and not nice to Lien either.

Have the EMH programme deleted by a Borg-induced power surge, which would see Kes step up as the ship's only medic--which would make any future medical-themed episodes all the more tense as the ship doesn't have a doctor onboard to rely upon. Also could've added a nice little dynamic between her and Paris (if he still became her helper), which could either become an alternative to Paris/Torres or seen the two of them developing a more sibling-like relationship (him seeking her advice when he hits a snag with Torres).
I don't like the idea of getting ride of the EMH because he was my favorite character but I do like the idea of her becoming more of a factor in medical stuff. What if

I'm not so sure. I mean actors have been replaced before on other tv shows and that is the last you hear of them. Wanting her to still be apart of the show and in essence still play her version of Kes doesn't seem so bad IMO. Granted when I say return I am thinking more of the lines of 8 to 9 ep's a year instead of just a single ep a year like you sometimes see with other reacurring characters like Barclay or Q or Troi. She could be like John Barrowman in the Arrowverse riight now.
Also I wouldn't even think it would be a bad idea to let the actress play another character as well. I know that didn't go over so well on TNG with people with Denise Crosby playing Sela but I don't think the idea is bad by nature. She could be a clone or from the mirror universe or a alien imposter just to list a few options.

I never liked the Sela plot. It was just.................bad.

If those in charge had been smart, they would never have killed off Tasha Yar. Then Crosby could have returned, played Tasha as a recurring character.

I have no intention to start an argument about this but I must state that I find the whole "Ryan takes over as the new Kes" idea repulsive. Even worse than that horrible episode in season 6 in which those in carge did everything they could to ruin and destroy the character.

Lien playing another character in Voyager would just be weird.

But note that it's my personal opinion which might be the opinion from a very narrow-minded Kes fan. I hope that you can live with that ;)

I'm fine with it. You have been good over the years of keeping your love for the Kes character a secret so it might surprise others. :)
As for other options Is they could have saved the return of Kes for the series final and have her use her powers to get the ship home. Granted you wouldn't get to see the character in the in-between years but it would have felt special IMO.

I'm extremely torn, so please bear with me as I explore some suggestions on this idea.
If it's a money matter, then Kate Mulgrew is out. She was the highest paid actor on the show. And the death of Janeway would have been a major event .

With the addition of Seven, and the retention of Kes, the male-female mix on cast would have remained the same. Chakotay would become captain (first Native American captain) and Tuvok first officer. I never felt that those two liked each other and that would place a interesting dynamic on the command team.
First of all, this idea has some interest, but is also means that the first female captain lead would die. So, likely as no, probably not going to happen.
Chakotay. Nobody would even notice.
Again, another concept that I really like, because I see a lot of potential for having B'Elanna having to step in and give some of the Maquis voice, depending on when it happens. Any unrest that occurs with Maquis (like the telepathic message in Tuvok) would have to be dealt with by B'Elanna. Again, good opportunities for character growth.

But, my initial gut reaction is Kim. His character had little growth or change over the series, no promotions, or anything. So, let's give other characters more opportunities and/or time.

Am I the only one who likes the idea of killing a character but keeping the actor much like on "Angel" with Fred? I got to admit I still wish years ago the writers would have did what they were considering and that was kill Riker in "Second Chances" and replace him with Thomas RIker, though in theory they could have kepth both alive and give Will Riker a promotion to captain and still have him around for the movies. I also loved the time Crighton was doubled for several episodes on "Farscape."
As for the idea of killing Janeway that would only work if you had a more compelling star to take over because Choctay just wouldn't cut it just like Riker wouldn't have as well if he replaced Picard at the end of "Best of Both Worlds." Not all characters are meant to be series leads.

The idea of killing a character but keeping the actor is interesting, but I'm not sure I trust the VOY writers to handle it with the care it deserves.

In any case, it's somewhat outside the scope of the overall question here. Not that threads can't drift, but it's not really of interest to me personally...at least, at this time.

Yeah that episode was dumb, what was the point of it, I can't even remember.
It would of been better if she had a return episode where she was some kind of godlike entity, but the polar opposite of Q.

I would have liked to see another end of the series than the terrible "Endgame".

Instead I would have liked to see a two-part episode with a finals shodown with Suspiria, the female caretakerv in which Kes could return and persuade Suspiria not to destroy the ship. Then Suspiria could have brought the ship home and give Kes a human lifespan. We would also have had a real homecoming for our favorites.

As for killing off main characters, I'm not att all fond of such stories. For me, characters are very important when it comes to liking a series. If certain characters leave or being killed off can ruin a series for me.

I really, really like the idea of someone giving Kes a normal human lifespan. Not sure why I never thought of that even though they actually did the reverse time episode were they were trying to expand her lifespan.
Not sure if I would go with Suspira. It would be sort of full circle in bringing in another Caretaker but if they did that I would like them to at least use her a couple of times before the series final to remind people of her, since they did kind of forget about the female Caretaker.

I think they actually made the right decision here. Showing the homecoming itself would have been kind of anticlimactic.

What's there to actually show? 10 minutes of tearstained Ensign Kim hugging his mommy and daddy, 7 awkwardly approaching her aunt, and Kathryn Mark who's in a new relationship by now, and a complimentary speech by some Admiral? The fireworks we already got in that brief journal recap scene at the very beginning. The only worthwhile exception I can think of right now would be Tom proudly presenting Admiral Paris with his wife and his daughter Miral.

The knowledge that they would be home within a few minutes sufficed for me.

I would have actually brought them home a year early and then have "Voyager" lead a new exploration mission with other ships involved back into the Delta Quadrant then make the season final a glimpse into the future and see how Voyager impacted the entire Quadrant. Federation colonies,no more Borg, a homeworld for the Hirogen,a more safer way of getting ride of waste for the Maleons and so forth. Maybe make it like a docomentary were the characters would be talking to a camera and stuff like that.

Actually, five seconds after the finale ended a Borg cube showed up and wiped out the ship. :p

Why not go a step further and have multiple crewmembers killed off?

Chakotay could be easily replaced with Tuvok, whilst introducing either a new crewmember or giving a recurring/guest one a promotion to regular cast to become the new Security Chief, Seven essentially takes over Kim's role at Ops, and with the EMH deleted then Kes is invaluable in sickbay. You could also nix Neelix as well and have Chell become a recurring character after he takes charge of the mess hall.
