One concern I have...

My only concern is that it will be VERY difficult for the next movie to match this one in terms of quality, critical acclaim, and box office receipts. Even if it kicks ass, it will likely be seen as a disappointment. I guess that's the price of success.
I don't see any way around it; what other sequel besides Empire Strikes Back was better loved than the original? I'm just going to enjoy this while we can.

^True enough. I'd rather be on top of the mountain and worried about falling down than never reaching the top in the first place. :)

i liked doohan's scotty but i also like pegg's scotty.
not only did scotty create miracles out of air and was a pretty good stand in commander of the ship (something i hope they remember) but he also told off a federation ambassador, drank an alien under the table and help start the bar fight when he was the one supposed to have been keeping things under control.

I like Pegg as Scotty too. it's a different interpretation, just like Uhura, but not bad. he's gotta work on his accent though. he sounds waaaaay English to me.

Really? You think he sounds English? (And yes I do know that Pegg is English - I love Shaun and Hot Fuzz). My Scots friends think he does a great Scottish accent (they're all from around Glasgow or Linlithgow).

I think he's brilliant as Scotty, and quite like a few cracked engineering types I've known.

Well um... you have Star Trek II, The Dark Knight, Terminator 2!

Not to mention that "Star Trek: First Contact" was infinitely better than "Generations," which was basically meant to pass the baton from one cast to the next, which is what "Star Trek XI" is doing.

If we look at this movie as the "Generations"-style setup movie for the new generation, then imagine what they can do with their version of "First Contact," where they don't have to bother introducing the characters again -- they can just get right into the story.

Uh. Dark Knight anyone???

Does anyone think the new Transformers movie will meet or exceed the previous???

Xmen2 was certainly better than Xmen1 and made a lot more money. (So was Spiderman2 arguably)

I think it's entirely possible that STXII can be just as good if not better. For one thing there's no need for any sort of . . . . introductions, or "origins story". That gives the writers how much extra time to play with? A half hour or more???

EDIT - Oh, three people already said that.
Don't forget Aliens either. That was a kickass movie too. Though, Alien is good in its own right for different reasons.

Point being sequels don't have to suck or make less money necessarily. There are lots of sequels which are superior to their originals. Especially when the first movie is made with a plan for movies 2 + 3

I can easily envision a third or fourth movie. But further than that? Who knows. The thing is if these films take the actors careers to a new level they might not want to stick around *too* long for fear of being too heavily associated with the characters. Nimoy and Shatner can't appear anywhere on t.v without people immediately thinking of Spock and Kirk. Im pretty sure the new actors will want to go onto other big movies at some point. I can see some of them jumping ship after the third movie if they think they can get something better.
