On your marks, get set, GO! - Russia to approve new Moon rocket.

One can only hope, its the only thing that apparently gets this country excited in manned space missions.

This would be absolutely fantastic news! The only thing better would be a 3-way race between the US, Russia, and China. Throw ESA and possibly the Indians into the mix, and this could be a very, very exciting chapter for humanity!

Except this will never happen.

NASA is closer to going to Mars than the Russians or Chinese are of going to the moon.

Not really. We won 40 years ago back when they were our "mortal enemy". People don't care about them now. It would help getting some extra funding for national security reasons but the population wouldn't be afraid of the Russians beating us now - mainly because we share the ISS. We're partners now.

Except this will never happen.

Except not. China has a good chance of beating us on going back to the moon since we're expected to get back there around the 19-22 timeframe with Mars at least 15-20 years after that.

But the immediate post shuttle era is about the U.S. going back to the Moon. I'm sure the Russians can get to the Moon fairly soon. So. I'm looking forward to some sort of competition where the Russians don't quit.

How do you figure that?

Considering the Russians never even sent a single cosmonaut around the moon.

Never really came close for that matter.

We did all the hard work for them and we didn't make it a state secret.

All they need to do is build the rocket and copy Apollo 11 and they'll be on the moon.

Despite the surge in oil revenue, the Russians are nowhere nearly as flush in cash and resources as the U.S. was in the 1960s.

And even if you can duplicate the technology, the expertise and experience is another thing entirely.

But based on reports in the 1960s, the Russians might not be as worried about getting back as the U.S. was/is. Russian's have had problems in that area. One the last recent Soyuz return missions from the ISS went off course and it was Russian farmers who tended to the initial recovery and getting the passengers out safely.. The Russians space guys actually did not know where it had landed.

I have no doubt that with a little increased effort there could be Russians on the Moon.
