On strangers paying for your meal out of the blue at a restauraunt...

Re: On strangers paying for your meal out of the blue at a restauraunt

Sounds odd, especially considering you didn't need that (right?). Would have been far more helpful for someone struggling (even if they can't "pay it forward" in return).

Sort of had that happen to me once. I was at a Circle K (I think that was my LAST time at one after this). I had only two dollars and some change to get gas, no more. Foolishly I didn't pre-pay (never occured to me), and I pumped over by like a dollar and thirteen cents. I had NO money. None. There was no stash somewhere, no bank account, no friend to ask, no family to call over. NO money. This was explained to the cashier, a male with an attitude.

He was a real dick about it, like it was all part of my plan to con Circle K out of $1.13. Consdering I got my gass there fairly regularly for a while at that time, alienating me over being broke wouldn't help. We reached a stalemate and I don't remember what the words were, but basically I said "No what?".

At which point the folks behind me, a nice couple, paid it.

I was so pissed I didn't even thank them when I got out of there.

More than "strange things" afoot at Circle k.

Re: On strangers paying for your meal out of the blue at a restauraunt

In Omaha, where I live, the city recently instituted a 2.5% food and beverage tax increase. In response, many people have protested by taking their business to a neighboring county (Omaha is in Douglas County, directly abutting Sarpy County, which has a substantial metropolitan area with pretty much anything that Omaha offers) or, as I am finding to be more the case while talking with wait staff at Omaha restaurants, tipping less while eating in Omaha restaurants.

So I have begun tipping more in Omaha's restaurants, in an attempt to offset those diners stiffing the wait staff on their tips because they're pissed at the city.

It helps that I don't attend very many restaurants in Omaha (I live in the Sarpy County area) and am on a first-name basis with the wait staff of most of the sit-down restaurants that I do patron in Omaha.

It has been awhile since anything like this has happened to me. I have had people in line at the grocery store who have a big order end up paying for my pack of gum type thing. I have actually done that as well. I paid for the sandwich and drink that the guy behind me was going to purchase. No reason, just felt like it.
I think it is a good thing to do these 'Random acts of kindness.' Makes those on the receiving end smile and it makes the giver, well at least me, smile and realize I may have just made someone's day a bit brighter. We can all use that :)

Is he off base with either his recommended action or his paranoia?

OR

Would I be the fool to not accept free stuff?

It's not about getting free stuff.

it's about encouraging kindness, something our society sorely lacks...

It is a great joy and a blessing to be in the position to be able to do something nice for random strangers sometimes. It rewards you as much as it does them. Sometimes we save ourselves by saving others.
