OMG, I just had a 9 3/4 year old kid tell me...

while we were watching the remastered episode "I, Mudd," that my Playmates NuE prominently on display was "exactly" the same as the Enterprise onscreen! My Son (his friend) attempted to point out what he felt were the significant differences, but the kid couldn't see them, and yes, his eysight is good.

We are a detail-blind culture, I fear. Awash in the bland backwash of simplistic perception and sheepish ignorance to iconic design.

Or maybe my Son's friend just ain't a Trek fan.

The details may be different but they are actually very similar in many ways.

RAMA

The overall shape itself is what's iconic. I suppose it's sort of like the Batman logo. It can change over the years, almost dramatically so, but nearly everyone will know that it's Batman.

Compared to an Imperial Star Cruiser or the Millenium Falcon, the two Enterprises ARE exactly alike! Please, do not give this kid Trek trauma at this impressionable moment.

That's cool. After watching remastered episodes on Netflix of TOS and seeing the new film, I can tell there are some differences. Not much, but some.

Oddly enough, this was used around here as an argument both for and against redesigning the ship: the general public can't tell much of a difference.

Geeze, I saw the difference between the TV & movie Serenitys for gosh sakes! The difference between TOS & new movie Enterprise is like a hundred times greater. :wtf:

If I ran a theatre, I'd say nobody comes into a Star Trek movie without a phaser, communicator or tricorder! That'd keep out the dopey non-fans that can't tell one nacelle from the next!!!

I can't tell the difference between a male flea and a female flea - but not only can the fleas tell, it's very important to them.
So, essentially, you're saying that hardcore Trekkies are as important in the overall scheme of things as fleas? :D

I thought he was saying that being able to tell the difference will only be an issue for those to whom being able to tell the difference is important, and that it won't matter so much for those to whom it isn't.

Or something like that.

Without fleas, the whole food chain would collapse, and countless other species (possibly even humans) would go extinct. So I'd say he's right.

Ah, that clears it up.
