/.../ findings that suggests OLET can outperform OLED in both brightness and efficiency in emitting light, a problem that is central to continuing OLED development.
(from here, where you can also find a link to the original article)

I think this technology sounds interesting - and with the prices and sizes of OLED monitors still being on the wrong side of more than academically interesting It might even become the next generation of TVs we're actually buying :)

Light-emitting transistors? Didn't know we had those. That's pretty cool!

Of course, if they are no more cost-effective than OLEDs, they won't gain much traction. :( I hope next-gen display technology comes down in price soon.

well, I guess on second look (with more sleep) it makes a little more sense.

My confusion was that, at first glance, it looked like the red, green, and blue sections were supposed to represent the colors emitted, and it looked like the h+ was ionized hydrogen. I just looked at it again and it looks like what they're saying is electrons and holes.

I don't think the colors are supposed to represent the RGB colors (probably a poor choice for their diagram)

Once the gate is activated, an electron crosses the boundry and encounters a hole crossing in the opposite direction, The energetic release in that medium emits light.

As for the chemical stuff to the side, I assume those are the chemical structures of the stuff in the middle, though I know jack about chemistry (my least favorite subject - which is odd, because I married a biochemist) ;)

^True, the colours are merely to illustrate layers -that's also how I see it- (and you're right, bad choice of colours when it comes to illustrate layers in light emitting tech it will make us think of 'coloured light')

But what we're left with is a diagram of a transistor :) -and some chemistry :(
