Downtime(1995) coming to DVD November 16.

Originally released on video in 1995, the 70-minute adventure sees Nicholas Courtney, Elisabeth Sladen, Deborah Watling and Jack Watling reprise their roles as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sarah Jane Smith, Victoria Waterfield, Professor Edward Travers respectively.

Downtime is released on DVD on Monday 16 November and is an unofficial sequel to the Second Doctor serials ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ and ‘The Web of Fear’.

The official synopsis reads: “We follow The Brigadier and Sarah Jane Smith of UNIT who investigate New World University; a sinister school run by old enemies Victoria Waterfield and Professor Travers. The technology obsessed University holds a gateway to Earth made by classic foe the ‘Great Intelligence’.

“Fighting alone this time – without their famous time-travelling scientific advisor – The Brigadier and Sarah Jane are hard pressed to decide who is friend or foe as they search for a missing Locus, which binds the Intelligence’s power. The battle is broadened when the Brigadier’s own family is threatened and UNIT faces a powerful new breed of Yeti!”

If it's available in Region 1 (or region free), it looks like it's worth getting. If nothing else, it can sit next to my The Stranger & Airzone Solution DVD's and get pulled out once in a while.

I wonder what will Ian Levine say about - what with him both having exec produced this and having recently filmed new scenes for it featuring Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor.

That's the story that introduced the character of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, isn't it? Her prominence in the series in recent years may be a factor in this release (even though the actress is different).

I've read the novelization of Downtime, but I've never seen the video. Is it any good? How are the production values, the acting, etc.?

Considering that it came in 1995, they gve Sarah Jane an '80's hairstyle. It really needed a followup. Victoria was alittle over the top. And now it's also a sequel to The Snowmen and The Name Of The Doctor.

^Well it's a sequel to "The Snowmen" because it features the Great Intelligence. I don't know about "The Name of the Doctor" though. I thought that the timeline of Great Intelligence stories went (from the Great Intelligence's perspective): "The Snowmen," "The Abominable Snowmen," "The Web of Fear," "Downtime," "The Bells of Saint John," "The Name of the Doctor."

Not as good as I was expecting. Nicholas Courtney & Elisabeth Sladen are solid but aren't in it as much as I wanted. Although, I suppose the special effects are pretty good considering this is a no-budget semi-professional fanfilm from the 1990s. At its best, it reminds me of some of the dodgier Sylvester McCoy stories from the late 1980s.

Thanks to Moffat the Great Intelligence seems to flirt around time and space, it needed a map the London underground in The Snowmen. So it's really hard to pin down a time line for the GI.

Ooh, I lost all my stranger and and other spinoff vhs tapes years ago. I'll certainly be getting this. I seem to remember there was at least one other unit spin-off after downtime.

I don't know if BBV are still in business. Maybe search ebay once in a while. I got the set of 6 when BBV were still listing regularly on ebay.

I just wish I could find the P.R.O.B.E. series. 4 out of 5 of these are written by Mark Gatiss.

The follow up to Downtime looks to be Dæmos Rising, but only Beverley Cressman as Kate Lethbridge Stewart is in it. No Brig, no Sarah Jane, no Victoria.

In fact, Downtime also has Geoffrey Beevers and John Leeson in "other" roles. Similar to The stranger stories having a lot of secondary Who actors in them.

I just looked at the cast list again and I didn't know Miles Richardson was also in it! He'll be familiar to anyone who follows Big Finish's Bernice Summerfield and/or Gallifrey series.

...which leads to the obvious question: Could his character just be Braxiatel incognito?

There's already legal action to stop this from the Haisman camp apparently.
Boo-urns. Who or what is the Haisman camp and why would they want to stop it?

The family of Mervyn Haisman who co-created the Yeti and the Great Intelligence and who thanks to the strange BBC practices of the time shares copyright on the characters. So when people try to put out a commercial release of his property without permission it's not surprising if they have a problem with it.

Ah, okay. I'm quite familiar with BBC's weird copyrights practices but I didn't recognize the name Haisman.

Well, in this case, I'd agree with the Haisman estate. If they have the legal right to the characters and concepts, then it's wrong to profit from a DVD release without their consent or participation. That's piracy. I'd like to see Downtime, but if it's being sold for profit, then the Haisman estate is entitled to its share of that profit.

Ar-Pharazon, I believe PROBE can be found on Dailymotion or Youtube, I made myself DVDs a couple years back
