Old Spock?

Trekkin' Trev'

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Any idea about how old Spock ends up at the end of Star Trek XI? Will he die (for good this time) or stay in the past, or just go back to 24C and just get on with being an ambassador? We know hes in the movie but with all the focus on the new cast this point doesn't seem to have been mentioned at all and just wondering if anything about this has been heard.

According to Memory Beta, Spock was born in 2230 and "Unification" (shot in 1991) was set in 2368. "Nemesis" was 2379.

Of course, Spock's body was reborn in 2285 (ST III).

We can't possibly answer this because we don't know... REALLY, WE DON'T... what role "old Spock" is playing in the film.

Is he involved in the "action?" Or is he essentially a narrator? Is the film supposed to be a linear adventure where it's his perspective we're seeing (even though they jump around through time)? Or is it set in the past entirely, but merely has Nimoy in the closing scenes in a "leap ahead" bit? Or is it framed by Nimoy, telling a story of his past to his protege (a Romulan)?

WE DO NOT KNOW. Do we?

How will it end up? Well, I'll give you my personal opinion... ie, what I would do if I were making this film.

My personal opinion is that Spock is very old when we first see him... not dying yet but clearly not too many years left to him. It would be implied that this is in the early 25th century, and Spock is well over 200 years old. He's talking someone, who we don't see clearly.

This younger man is wearing a uniform that is recognizable as a Starfleet uniform, though not exactly one we've seen before. He's facing his Command School trials, and is questioning his right to lead. He's questioning how he can ever match up to the great leaders he's studied. And so, he's asking Spock, his mentor, about this.

Spock relates the story of James T. Kirk, the greatest LEGEND in Starfleet history... and one who he has personal knowledge of. We get a brief flashback to Kirk's history... to his birth, of his learning of the death of his father when he was about 12, to his decision to join Starfleet. This is all in very narrative form, with Nimoy's words over the scenes.

We then return to the "present," and see Nimoy's face. He then brings himself into the story... and his face dissolves into Quinto's face, as he leaves his parents to go to Starfleet (with his father's great disapproval).

The story then becomes linear... but not static. It moves forward for the most part, but with "jumps" forward to different timeframes." With each period being there to tell a pertinent part of the story Spock is relating... one that takes place throughout Kirk's life.

When the story has been told, we return to Nimoy as "old Spock" finishing his tale.

Only then do we see the full face of the Starfleet Lieutenant who Spock has been mentoring, and realize that this Command-track Starfleet officer is a Romulan.

We've got a new character, tied to the past, but available for new, ongoing adventures... and one who would DEFINITELY be a break from what we've known before.

Anyway, that's what >I< would do.

That would be sweet. I got chills as I finished reading it, though I AM cold, hehe.

I love the idea.

I like it, but wouldn't do the dissolve into Quinto. That's a bit played out, methinks. I would prefer a hard cut, it's a bit more dramatic (think the cut in Indy IV from young Indy to old getting socked in the face :)

What Will Old Spock Be Doing In The New Film ?

* ARGH ! *

P.S. In all seriousness what Cary typed sounds wonderful tho'

I suspect his role is large. Nimoy turned down the opportunity to appear in Generations because his role there was a glorified cameo that disappears around twenty minutes into the film.

Nimoy will be pretty pivotal in this film. Will he meet the cast in the past? Well, wasn't there a lot of hoopla about a scene being reshot twenty times that included the Vulcan salute, and some speculated it was Quinto saluting Nimoy?

Anyway, I don't know.

Nimoy didn't want to be in Generations not because he didn't have a lot of screen time, but because his character didn't have a ROLE... he was "set dressing" and nothing more.

Nimoy has stated that his role in this film MATTERS, and so he's interested in doing it.

Having the role "matter" doesn't mean that he's in every scene, or the majority of scenes.

A great example would be the role of the older character... wasn't her name Rose?... in "Titanic." She was in only the "wrap-around" scenes... but it was a really significant and important role, and was actually more significant to the film than the "young version" we saw throughout MOST of the film, I think. She's the reason we CARED about what happened in the past.

I'd prefer to see Nimoy's Spock playing that same role. And that is entirely consistent with everything we KNOW so far.

Having him playing an "action hero," on the other hand... I think would be LAUGHABLE. And having him being in the core of the action, even if he's not personally the one fighting Kling-toes and Freebles, would just slow the narrative down.

I think his role is MORE significant in the way I wrote it above than it would be if he were "time-trippin' Spock."

"Time Trippin' Spock" -- wasn't that the B-side of "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins"?

Old Spock will be in a retirement home on Vulcan. His 3 young grand-kids come to visit him.

OLD SPOCK: "You youngins' have it too easy these days! Why in my day we didn't have no fancy 'hologram chambers' and -"

KID1: "I'm bored. Let's go throw rocks."

KID2: "Logical."

OLD SPOCK: "Quiet, dammit!" *whacks them with broom handle*

KID3: "This sucks."

OLD SPOCK: "So, as I was sayin', back in my day the younins had more respect for their parents. I was a commander in the UESPA, which is what they called the starfleet in them days. I was the first officer of the Excelsior-"

KID 1: "Wasn't it the Enterprise?"

OLD SPOCK: "Don't correct me, boy!" *whacks him again with broom*

From there the rest of the movie is a disjoined flashback as told by senile old Spock. At the end, it is clear that the Kids have long since snuck out, and Spock is now telling the story to an empty room. He grumbles and goes back to watching his Soaps.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
LOL! Spock as Grandpa Simpson.

I'm hoping to be surprised by not only how important and meaty old Spock's role is to the plot, but that it's also done without a lick of sentiment.
