okay..YOU cast it...

I have read grumblings over the past week about the casting of the movie..from PINE to BANA and others as well...well, you armchair quarterbacks, who would you have casted in this movie if you had had your way?? And remember the 'budget' aspect when you do this, because I am sure JJ had to stay in a certain area of cost, and I think he did a great job...

So....who would you cast instead???

Rob

For Pike, Ray Liotta.

For McCoy, Gary Sinise.

And for Scotty, Paul McGillion.

Not sure about Chekov, but Yelchin sure ain't it. If there's one thing Walter Koenig proved, it's that you don't have to be 22 to play 22. You just have to remember what it was like.

I'd willing to be convinced by the rest of the cast, but I'd also be willing to look at anyone else who might have a better handle on the respective characters.

And for the ship (yes, I consider this a casting decision), take the TOS-R model, render it up to big screen resolution, add details where needed.

And the first person to bring up time travel as a plot element would be bodily thrown off the lot.

The only role I am unsure of right now is:

-Simon Pegg as Scotty (I liked the idea of James McAvoy as Scotty, a role he supposedly turned down)

A little less than ten years ago, the rumors of Matt Damon as Kirk and Adrian Brody as Spock would have definitely worked for me. It's a pity that development on the project took so long that they essentially aged out.

And for the ship (yes, I consider this a casting decision)...
Good luck getting that to fly in real-life Hollywood. (And yes, thank you -- I'm quite aware that "real-life Hollywood" is something of a contradiction in terms. :p )

I'm also wondering where Rob has been reading grumblings about casting only during the last week. The grumbling in this forum started more than a year ago, before anyone had yet been named, and continued building with each official announcement, peaking during the week immediately following the release of the theatrical trailer, if not earlier. Casting-related gripes tailed well off after that and have barely been mentioned here at all during the last month.

Kirk - Jason Lee
Spock - Paul Reubens
McCoy - Seth Rogen
Scotty - Jan-Michael Vincent
Uhura - Lexa Doig

Everybody else - I don't give a fuck. Who are they, again?

It just seems like the grumbling on this site goes in waves..

I remember full well the minions who came on this site and badgered the Heath Ledger casting as Joker.."Oh, why didn't they get Johnny Depp..Ledger can't act..blah blah blah blah.." I am not comparing the naysayers of this cast to those Ledger complaints, but I have a good feeling they will be eating crow...too.

Awwww, maaan.. You stole my dream team. I hate you. Who would play Porthos? I went for Tina Yothers.

Kirk - Samuel L. Jackson
McCoy - Samuel L. Jackson
Spock - Samuel L. Jackson
Scotty - Samuel L. Jackson

Uhura - ...........

Samuel L. Jackson?

Chekov - Vlad Putin

The rest of the cast is a tough call.

YEah, but who would play Samuel Jackson??

Jaleel White??

Kirk: George Peppard
Spock: Dirk Benedict
McCoy: Mr. T
Reginald Barclay: Dwight Schultz

if you really think about it, B.A. Baracus and Dr. McCoy were very similar in some respects...really.

But Seriously (assuming I can't pick the actual actors, though I have no real problem with any of them)...

Kirk: Michael C. Hall (Peter Kraus would be better, but way too old. Even Hall is too old, but so what)

Spock: Colin Hanks

McCoy: I'll cheat here and say Karl Urban. I think Urban may be a "genius/think out of the box" choice.

Gary Sinese may look like McCoy, but he seems to be a "humorless" individual. I think if Sinise tried to act "cantankerous, but charming and warm" he could not do it in a believable manner and would fail.
"Sounds like and looks like" only goes so far when trying to portray a pre-existing character. Aside from the resemblance to De Kelley, Sinise is all wrong for the part.

If I didn't cheat, I would have to say Josh Holloway as McCoy -- but he would need to be "re-styled" a bit (but if they could re-style Urban, they could re-style Holloway)

Scotty: Jeremy Sisto (if he could do an accent) or James McAvoy.

Pike: Tom Hanks (although it may be problematic if his son played Spock. If they have too many scenes together, it may be hard for audiences to see past that.)

Nero: I'll cheat again and say Bana, since he is a great actor (plus it's easy to say Bana will be a good Nero, since Nero is a brand-new character)

I can't begin to cast the other three, since they would most likely be unknown but promising young actors, and quite frankly I don't know much about unknown actors. I suppose I could say James Kyson Lee as Sulu, but that's only because my list of choices is small. I'm sure there are many other young capable actors who I never heard of.

I definately concur on Gary Sinise as McCoy. He looks the part and I've seen enough of his work to know that he could act the part, but from what I've heard about Karl Urban's performance, we won't be too disappointed.

I can't really pin anyone down for the rest of the cast, though. I definitely would NOT pick Adrian Brody for Spock; I don't know why, but I just can't see him in the role. And I'm glad the rumors of Matt Damon as Kirk were only rumors, because then this would've turned into a Matt Damon movie. Star Trek movies don't need a face that stands out, like a Matt Damon or a Tom Cruise or an Angelina Jolie, because if you put in one of those people, it becomes about them and their character above anyone else. I think that, more than anything else, is what kept the Mission: Impossible movies from being truly good as the series that inspired them.

My picks as follows:

Chris Pine: Captain James T. Kirk
Zachary Quinte: Spock
Karl Urban: Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Simon Pegg: Montgomery "Scotty" Scott
Zoe Saldana: Uhura
John Cho: Hikaru Sulu
Anton Yelchin: Pavel Chekov
Bruce Greenwood: Captain Christopher Pike
Eric Bana: Nero

I think Liotta as Pike has a similar problem. It only works if you're looking at still photographs of the actors. Watching Liotta in motion and talking just doesn't say "Chris Pike" to me.

It's the gestalt - Liotta comes across as mediterranean, Hunter as completely whitebread.

Plus, Liotta has had some really bad work done:

I completely agree that Liotta has the wrong "mojo" for Pike, just like I can't imagine Sinise as a believable McCoy...but my post was already long enough, so I cut that paragraph. :)

I'm fine with the casting as is, except for Scotty. I agree that Paul McGillion would be better. I wonder why he didn't get the role.
