Okay, who will portray Kirk?

All the talk has been about the rumors that Quinto has been signed to play Spock, it's just a matter of the contract now.

Plus, Matt Damon has explicitly debunked the rumor that he is going to be Kirk.

I've seen lots of posts about "wish lists" for Kirk, but I haven't heard any buzz about who might really be in the running for role.

It's as if the Matt Damon rumor was a smokescreen to hide the real search (and it has worked!) No wonder the production team never really denied the rumor, in fact I think one the writers actually said he thought it would be great.

But now that the rumor is officially dead, and all the talk is about Quinto, has anyone heard any real inside-baseball buzz about who is being looked at to play Kirk?

I don't want another thread about wish lists, but about who actually will play him?

Will they announce it tomorrow? Or is Quinto the only news they're able to announce?

Something has to be in the works if they are going to start shooting in November. Last-minute casting decisions do happen, of course, but you wouldn't think your lead role would be one of them.

My guess is that they're going to announce the actors portraying Kirk, Spock, and McCoy Thursday at SDCC. Paramount's got a big presence there, and its two biggest franchises of interest right now are Transformers and Star Trek.

Who will play Kirk? That's a tough one. I think it should be a relative unknown, and the actor should be somewhat younger than Quinto's Spock (if he's cast in the role)

I only mean about five years younger, so we're talking a twenty-five year old actor who maybe looks the part somewhat and has the charm and charisma of Shatner?

There is very likely some unknown meeting this requirements out there.

I think he'll be an unknown no longer on Thursday.

There's been no reliable rumors thus far about Kirk - usually people close to the actor start leaking this stuff when they're offered the job, certainly when they sign (hence the flurry of talk about Quinto this week).

I'm thinking Joshua Jackson might be a decent choice. I never cared for Dawson's Creek but he's becoming quite a decent actor. I was pleasantly surprised by him in Bobby and apparently he impressed Chris Nolan and David Goyer enough to make the shortlist for Batman/ Bruce Wayne.

I'm too much of a techno gimp to be able to post a pic of him,but I also think he's a reasonable enough likeness for young Shat.

Shatner is quite distinctive looking, there aren't too many (hardly any) lookalikes, so their work will be cut out in getting one who's as good a ringer for him as Quinto is for Nimoy. Perhaps that's part of the reason why Shatner won't appear in the movie - they don't want to repeat the error of Nemesis, where Picard's clone looked nothing like him.

A completely unknown actor should play Kirk. Did we really know William Shatner before he played Kirk? Yes he was on Twilight Zone, but most of us didn't realize it untill after we watched him as Captain Kirk. Oh, and it does help if they can find someone that at least resembles a young William Shatner, the way Quinto resembles a young Leonard Nimoy.

It must be jensen ackles. He's the right build, age, colouring, a good action actor with a comic twist - and he'd probably carry a whole load of younger fans over with him to join the trek nation.

Jensen Ackles is a bit too pretty. I could see him as Pike.

From Supernatural, his kid brother (Jared Padelecki) seems more Kirk-like. If people want a 25-year-old, he fits. I haven't watched the show enough to know anything about his acting ability. The "problem" with Padelecki is that he's as tall as Quinto, but we can't have everything, can we?

For TV actors with the right looks and age: Michael C. Hall (my first choice - right looks, right height, excellent actor, maybe a bit older than they'd want but he can pass for younger) and Michael Trucco.

As a huge Kirk fan, I'd have to say he was very VERY pretty in the OS. The patch of light around his eyes, the soft focus treatment - you've got to be beautiful and yet manly to get away with it. Ackles can do both - and he'd play to the sexuality of Kirk too.

Kirk's got more the boyish looks of a Jared Padelecki as opposed to Ackles' looks. Maybe I'll make this a poll. We have some time to kill before we know for sure.

Hmm. Trouble is, it's such a vital role - with such a legion of fans - that it's just got to be right. I wonder how many they looked at. There's a panel I'd have paid good money to be on! "Turn round, pose, profile, smile, wink at me...come on, make it look like you WANT to wink at me...!" Yeah, I could go for that.

Jensen Ackle's acting style is nothing like Shatner's. There isnt much of a visual resemblence between the two of them either. Poor choice.

They should go with an unknown who bears some resemblence to Shatner in voice and appearance; like Routh to Reeve.

Actually, Shatner was an in-demand actor at the time having turned down an offer to be a MGM contract player and being the lead in Dr. Kildare.

Hes a good actor and has a scifi background. I can see a younger Kirk look on him visually. He looks alot like the Art Asylum figure of Kirk.

Zach Gilford (age 25) from Friday Night Lights (plays Matt Saracen). He's got great screen presence and is a wonderful actor. He's the best one on the show. He also did a guest role on Law & Order: SVU.
