OK, so I finally saw Half Blood Prince

There is nothing "middle of the road" or "craftsman" about Columbus' work. He infused the WW with a sparkle and a glow that lent it a magical ambiance that set it apart from the muggle world. In the later films, the only way to tell them apart visually is the costumes and the obvious 1700s style sets.

Have you seen Chris Columbus' films? The Home Alone films, Mrs. Doubtfire, Stepmom, Bicentennial Man, I Love You, Beth Cooper and most recently Percy Jackson all have that simplistic color palette with very industrialist workmanship. I mean, the movies he does are so trite and "mainstream Hollywood". Has he ever not done a movie that was sappy or annoyingly bittersweet or something that fit within the confines of the Hollywood studio system? Does he ever experiment, like Alfonso Cuaron does, or even Mike Newell? No, he makes the same plain looking movie with every film he does, and his two Harry Potter films are no exception.

As much as I hate the first HP flick, I also think Chamber of Secrets could be the best one of them all. And I'm not a fan of Columbus's work overall.
