Ok for Children?

I was planning to go watch the movie today. Do you think it would be ok to watch with my 5 year old? Has anyone else taken their children to the movie?

I certainly think so. There were a number of kids in both screenings I went to. My daughter's only 2 and if she'd sit still for that long I'd take her.

It depends on the child.

Sex of course is not a problem, even if the movie had any. There is no gore at all, either. However, the big monster on Delta Vega might scare the crap out of your 5yr old kid. But as I said, that depends on your child.

It'd be fine. Lots of colour, and explosions with only one or two minor swear words.

No gore, no sex, some very minor swearing, skin as much or less than you see at a beach in summer and even then really brief.

If your kid has ever watched the news or any action movie before you can definitely take him/her to Star Trek.

took my 9 yo. saw no problems really. Didn't take the 5 yo just because if she got board with it i didn't wanna deal with an antsy 5 yo. If ya just wanna enjoy the movie id say get a sitter. but then I don't know how well behaved you kid is. As far as content though. There's the one scene we've all seen in the trailers with the Orion chick and Kirk and Uhura getting down to her skimpies. And theres one or two swares in it. other than that id say its all good.

Wow. There is another "poll" thread on this topic and the responses were generally more negative. I haven't seen it yet because I don't want to take my kids and I can't get childcare for a few days. :( I'm more on the side that even though there is no "gore" per se, the level of action and vivid scenes may still be too much for young ones. It's not like taking them would really be for *their* benefit, you know. ;)

My kids aren't interested in Star Trek, so I don't want to be distracted by having to make them sit still in the theater if I was to take them along.

Can you take your five-year old?

No one will stop you. Is it a movie for five-year olds? No.

Would I take my five-year old? No.

Why rush it? They'll come to enjoy it later.

There were some young kids in the showings we went to -- early show (7 p.m.) Thursday and Friday.

I didn't see any problems with kids, except for one -- one lady looked to be consoling a child on their way out into the lobby.

It was IMAX, and scarey stuff looks bigger and sounds louder. Or maybe it was an entirely different issue not to do with the movie.

I think that its just fine for children.

I saw Star Trek: VI in theaters when I was six and I think that that movie (though it had a PG rating) was much less appropriate for kids (with pink blood and all).

Everyone raises their kids differently and that would have been a problem for me. But like you said there wasn't any.

After watching Jurassic Park and Transformers many times I don't think these creatures would phase my kids.

So it just goes to show you don't need sex and gory violence to have a great movie. :techman:

I'm more concerned by the sound volume which bothered me. Also some of the onscreen movements were very intense at times. I'll wait for the DVD to show it to the kids (7 & 8).

^ ^ I always carry a little box of earplugs to movies. I even had to hand them out to the young nephews and my sister when we went to Medieval Times. Some places are just too loud.

Of course. But don't get me wrong! It was said in the spirit that a 5yr old doesn't understand sex when he sees it, so if there was a small sex scene (as so many movies have nowadays) it would go right above his head anyway. 7 & 8 is a bit dicier, I'd be concerned about such a scene then, if it had more then just a flash of a nipple or something.

I completely agree.

And about the sound volume: It depends on your theater. The sounds weren't all that loud in mine (except the phasers -- they gave me a headache).

I haven't been to a movie since Nemesis. The theater was set up differently than other I had been to with a lower front section and then the rest of the theater was raised. We were the first row of this raised area and I was very overwhelmed during the numerous ads and such until I became accustomed by the time this awesome movie started.

I don't think there is anything that inappropriate for kids in the movie per se, but I wouldn't take a 5 year old. It might ruin the experience for yourself and those around you, and the kid certainly won't understand it anyway.

I think the youngest would be 7
but that's just my opinion as a college kid with no kids myself. I do think the movie would be too intense for anyone under 7.
