Oh for cryin' out loud! (Uncle SPOILERS)

^^^
In "The Naked Time" one could infer there were family problems in Spock's household.

In this little blurb I think I see what will be a kindred spirit between Spock and Kirk. McCoy and his "running from his pain" will also be added so that we will begin to understand their friendship. All three are driven, hard working, proving themselves and running from pain in the past. I actually like this scenario.

In JOURNEY TO BABEL, the only indication of a problem between Spock and Sarek is the fact Spock wouldn't set course in the direction Sarek wanted, and instead joined Starfleet.

Is that so? :)

Is it not?
Could it be?

Actually, I agree that ST Zero should not be another 'movie of the week' case history of child abuse, etc. It's so easy to blame someone else for what happens in our lives, rather than take responsibility for our actions. :vulcan:

Can't a hero or a villain make it to adulthood without having been abused in some way by a father figure?!?!?

I haven't seen any movies lately like this. I'm fine with this personally.

Kirk didn't need to have been abused as a kid to have become the man we know him to be.

No he didn't need to be abused, but why his uncle did it is a mystery anyway. Oh wait, this will be played out and we'll see what happens in May.

This is something I think just stinks. There was no need for this.

Wow, you're reacting as though a parent or loved one just died or something catastrophic happened. Star Trek didn't "need" a lot of things but we got it anyway and there were no complaints. So...

Meh, I'll wait for the movie.

The fact we haven't heard about this guy before suggests he isn't exactly integral to the plot.

Abusive doesn't have to mean physical abuse.

You mean like joining Starfleet and becoming one of the most renowned captains in history? Seems to me they're making the case that he used the adversity in his life to motivate him to do bigger and better things rather than wallowing in self-pity.

That being said, if a parent or authority figure abuses you, that would seem to be a fairly justifiable reason to blame them for some of your own personal issues later on.

I hope we see a young Kirk kill an entire village of Sand People.

If there's no rant about how sand gets in young Kirk's crevices I'm boycotting.
It was a problem that would return in later years....

I haven't been following any of the rumors/spoilers for Trek XI, but the fact that there's this talk of a heretofore unseen 'sexually abusive' Uncle causing a childhood trauma on a character that 1.) As our Protagonist, grows up to arguably be one of the most renown Captains in the StarFleet and 2.) Is someone whose character is chiefly considered to be sexually driven by 95% of the movie going audience who only know of him as the ICON 'Captain Kirk', is a little bit much just hearing about it. Hell 50% of Modern Trek fans tend to think Kirk was a Sex machine who has bedded about 6/10ths of explored space, but that was never the character and without knowing if the writers were aware of that gives me pause.

Do you really want to first conceive of a character with a history of sexual abuse and then make him the lady's man of a hundred worlds? I certainly hope not.

I just have to believe that they're chracaterizing with information about who the characters 'actually' are and not just off of what people 'tended' to remember or considered them to have been about.

I'm staying open minded however, depending on how the story goes, these rumors could be misleading or even just that, rumors. I've always like to see the finished product before going off on a movie, and from what I have actually seen of the movie thus far, I haven't had any problems with the visuals.

I'm just hoping the characters are there on opening day.

Was that from another article? The one I saw mentioned that the uncle was an "alcoholic and abusive asshole," but never said anything about being sexually abusive. The implication to me was that the uncle would hit him, not molest him.

Spock was emotionally abused by his father.

Fact.

Didn't hurt the character none. Seems ta me that they got a halfway decent story out of it.
I agree. "Abuse" comes in all forms and all levels... I'd actually be very surprised if Jimmy Kirk ends up being raised by one of the "Deliverance Boys." But there's always tension in relationships, and having had his dad die in the line of duty would certainly foment a certain degree of ... tension?.. in the relationship between him and his other family members, wouldn't it?

If handled well (as in, how the Spock/Sarek situation was), this could be great. If handled poorly... it could suck. But the concept ITSELF doesn't suck.

No, the "sexual-abuse" angle, as well as the "redneck/white trash" one raised in another thread, seem to have appeared out of thin air. People have been told about them, people talk about them, but I've seen no article or interview given as a source for those details.

Hmmm. I'm disappointed by the drunken uncle character, who hereafter I will refer to as "Druncle." I was hoping for a drunken stepfather.

This is a narrative choice which could go anywhere from crap to sublime (don't want to use words like 'touching' around Druncle. Don't give him ideas.), and I'll adopt the "wait'n'see."
