News Official Star Trek NFT Collection Announced

It gets me that it's $250 dollars for a procedurally generated ship. You don't even know what it's going to look like before it's bought. There's no artistry or thought that goes into such a vapid product. You could have 5 or more Eaglemoss ships for the same price and they are beautiful, physical things that sit on a shelf and as long as the owner is careful, they will do so for a lifetime.

I just searched twitter with the terms "str trek nft" because I was looking for some bit of info on that company they've partnered with, and boy, are there many accounts of nft/ crypto/ blockchain enthusiasts! And I didn't even find what I was looking for.

NFTs are the ultimate form of the "greater fool" scam. You get people to essentially give you money for nothing, without even having to provide the thinnest veneer that they are purchasing something of immediate value. Just make them believe that what they are doing now will somehow profit them in the future, using a lot of vague and nebulous phrasing. So now you have people trying to unload this nothing onto other fools, with each new fool hoping they're not the last fool holding onto the nothing when the system inevitable collapses. I hope that Paramount gets all that they deserve from this and more.

You can download mods for Star Trek Bridge Commander and the Starfleet Command games that are more professionally made than a $250 procedurally generated train wreck...FOR FREE! And they're more interactive than this dreck (you can fly the ships, make them fight each each other, etc.)

NFTs always sounded shady to begin with, but the more I learn about them, the more they look like scams.

It's one of those things where the advantage will always be in the company's court. They'll be the ones making mintloads, meanwhile the actual tech has very little advantage to the end-user. That's why they try so hard to convey value. I'll admit, it's rather amusing to see that every single time something like this is announced, that there will be some backpedaling and trying to save face from those involved.

Rapp says he has researched now, but he's still basically just making excuses about how these NFTs are the good kind guys, c'mon don't hate me!

Oh, there are good kinds? Nope. There are no good kinds. Meanwhile, I hear there's a good opportunity to sell bridges. I feel bad for those involved, and I only hope the NFT trend blows over soon.

If the initial license expires, wouldn't CBS license it to another company, to keep making money?

I don't think it quite works that way with this. I think it'd be like starting from scratch with a different service with the way NFTs work. Any NFTs anybody had back at the old one wouldn't likely transfer over, because those would be considered part of the original service. Man, the legalities surrounding these must be a load of fun. Anyone excited yet?? :ack:

A far more Star-Trek-like endeavour would be supporting humanitarian efforts and charities of countries in need, but that likely won't happen as it doesn't make money.

All of NFT / Crypto Currencies are shams, they're just glorified wastes of time/electricity/money.

You should stay away from them like you would stay away from "The Plague".

It ain't worth your time to care, and only a fool would waste a single thought on them.

I suspect this is the kind of thing Paramount were like, "NFTs can make us money, do something Star Trek" and despite them being 100% opposite to what Trek stands for, they've gotta do what their paymasters demand.

Or that's what I like to think. Otherwise... fuck em.

Yep, I suspect that's exactly what happened. Big parent company is gonna do what it's gonna do and jump onto the latest bandwagon. It's a surefire thing, they can't lose!

Well, whenever these things are announced, I always notice a pattern and it's the same every single time. It never fails:

1. The NFT announcement and pledge, accompanied by loads of buzzwords about how much value they'll bring to the customer.
2. The following uproar and backlash.
3. The assurances by the company that this is the future, that they really are a great value, and that anyone against them don't really understand them. Cue the Rapp quote above. I don't mean to single him out, but it sounds so much like what I've heard before from other companies. None of them can offer a convincing argument as for why these things are needed. They're all vague and hollow assurances.
4. For the most part, those who are against them know what they're talking about. They're not just vocal minorities. They are warning about the dangers because they understand how terrible they are. They're usually the ones that are informed the most. In certain cases, I've seen companies do 180s after realizing the mistake they've made, but they're usually smaller ones that can't afford to piss off their demographic.

This isn't just a bad trend, but a harmful one that I can only hope will die off in a year or two. It's not a sustainable industry, and the companies that invest in this are going to find out the hard way when they crash.

You know what WOULD make Paramount fuckloads of money without any of the NFT harm? Let fans use a "create a starship" type online feature, and if they're willing to piss away a cool $999,999 their monstrosity gets shown in an episode. $2,999,999 and it gets an upclose shot with the name and number of their choice (within reason) along the hull.

They'd probably pay for their next season within a week, at the cost of the most deranged version of Starfleet since those DS9 kitbashes.
