I didn't see a dedicated thread for the next special, so I made one.

After the credits finished rolling for "Planet of the Dead", there was a preview for the next special, and it gave a title: "The Waters of Mars". The preview can be seen here.

Unfortunately, we won't get to see it until "November-ish", according to Russell T. Davies.

From Wikipedia:

The story is set on Marshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Waters_of_Mars#cite_note-7 and the Doctor will be joined by a new companion named Adelaide, played by Lindsay Duncan. Producer Nikki Wilson (née Smith) described the character as "the Doctor's cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet."

Wikipedia

I think that's enough to get things started. Thoughts anyone?

So, what do we know about Mars?

A long time ago, Mars was inhabited by a race of reptiles allegedly named the Ice Warriors. As the planet became more and more inhospitable, the Ice Warriors repeatedly tried to conquer Earth.

A race of powerful humanoids called the Osirians later set up pyramid-shaped bases on Mars.

In the late 20th Century a group of peaceful aliens meet British astronauts on Mars.

Space Agent Bret Vyon was born in Mars Colony 16 in the 40th Century.

Anything else?

I think it's something to do with the Master. Didn't RTD say that there will be an enemy that we will see throughout the last three specials, as they will be intertwined, like Utopia and the final two episodes.

Slightly off topic, but I wondering if they are going to throw a curveball in, and have the Doctor regerate mid way through the final episode, not in the final 30 seconds.

I SERIOUSLY doubt it as it would be extremely unfair on Moffatt to have key moments for his new Doctor drafted by Davies, would it not?

I have a feeling we will see Matt Smith in the last special, but only for a few minutes at most, and if it is anything more than a few seconds ("Where was I, oh yes...Barcelona" style) then expect to see a Moffatt co-credit there.

Well, when I first heard the title I was sure that there was going to be some sort of link to the Ice Warriors but the more I think about it I think there's only going to be some sort of tangential reference to them like in The Christmas Invasion.

I assume Waters of Mars is about a gorup of human scientist either visiting Mars, or living on the first Mars base, and it may or may not provide an answer to the question of is there is water on Mars.

Maybe they drill down to some ice, and out come the Ice Warriors.

RTD said in the interview in SFX last month that the regen's at the end. his script ends and literally one second later Moff's starts.

so can anyone tell me if this is going to be his 3rd or 2nd out of 4 specials he's doing. they keep saying "he's doing 4 specials in 2009" but i'm not sure if they meant he's doing 4 specials in total (including the 2008 christmas special) or doing 4 in 2009 (making the 2008 christmas special excluded). since we won't be seeing the new special until november, if this is the second one, it seems kind of jam packed to have 3 specials airing at the end of the year.

^It's 4 in 2009, 5 total:

"The Next Doctor"
"Planet of the Dead"
"The Waters of Mars"
Tennant's big finale, part 1
Tennant's big finale, part 2

So thoretically:

"The Waters of Mars" - November'ish

Tennant's big finale, part 1 - Xmas 2009

Tennant's big finale, part 2 - New Years Day ???????????

Season 5 - April 2010

Weren't the first Ice Warriors that the Doctor encountered, in Earth's Future, from Mars' distant past, but frozen in time? Maybe at some point the Ice Warriors melted and turned into Liquid Warriors and the "Water of Mars" is/are the descendants or an evolutionary split off of the old Ice Warriors?

how do you evolve from a reptilian humanoid race to being a liquid? without the help of Kryptonite of course, watch Smallville you know that stuff makes anything possible.

Ice Warriors are not warriors literally made of ice. They're reptilian creatures who live in cold climates.

Pointed out in the papers today: -

Waters Of Mars is damn close to an anagram of The Masters War

Maybe a bit of fun, though it also says..

We see John Simm as the Master at the end

the Doctor would not have any problems defeating anything made of ice.
