offical german site reports: New series called Star Trek Prime

According to a news item on the offical german star trek site "startrek.de" the new series is to be called "Star Trek Prime"..in the news they show a poster bearing that title

http://www.startrek.de/stcom/90/

But I have my doubts for several reasons:

I couldn´t find anything via a google search, there is nothing on the US site of CBS at all..

AND I doubt if this is really an offical site or if its just faking it...according to its imprint the site is run by "Paramount Home Entertainment Germany GmbH" which is the german DVD-sales branch of Paramount here. Also mentioned in the imprint is "Trekworld Marketing GmbH" which is a big trek merchandising company here as far as I now.

Seems to be correct so far...but shouldn´t CBS be mentioned with its german branch there too?

I looked up the domain on whois, and this is where it gets even more mysterious...the domain is not registered to CBS, Paramount or Viacom at all! But to some guy called "Gerhard Raible".

On the other hand this website has been around since 2008...if it wasnt offical CBS/Parmount would have sent there lawyers by now because of the domain name.

So...what do you think? Legit? Very well done and orchestrated fake?

It's a fake! :D

edit: arrrgh, I was the first. ;) I guess this Gerhard Raible is a "funbird", as the germans say.

I did some more research and re-read the imprint. Gerhard Raible is the responsible person as required by german "tele media law"...the site itself is legit. It IS the offical german startrek site. The news is there since November. But still..Germany may be the biggest non english speaking overseas market for Trek (as far as I know)..but why the hell should we get such important information before the US? Okay..somebody at CBS/Paramount Germany might have talked prematurely...but then CBS US should have you know...told them to shut up..or posted the same item on StarTrek.com or something?

And whats with that title? "Star Trek Prime"? Really? Okay...many fans are hoping the new series will be set in the prime universe..but would you actually NAME the show "Prime" for that reason?

Oh..that explains a lot. Now on to getting the rest of german fandom to believe me when I say that its fake ;-)

Good luck with that.

My son is a huge Trek fan so for fun I made and posted the following Teaser Poster to my Facebook page for him to find.

After a laugh, I actually had to show him my Photoshop file for him to believe it was a fake. And since I'm posting it here, I should credit the assets I used to stay in line with site rules.

Interceptor Class Concept by Narsil, Lightwave mesh by Mavek, conversion for 3DSMax by J. Cassio "Starship".
Starfield 01 by GlenRoberson at Deviant Art.
Nebula Meliana by Mithgariel at Deviant Art.
Remaining assets from NASA.

You are a very naughty dad!

@DReffects: I'll wait for a confirmation on cbs.com. I guess that's the best thing to do?

Sure, but startrek.de (which is the official german website) posted this already back in November and confirmed the validity today - so this isn't a careless mistake.
Unless of course the editor behind startrek.de is messing with us. But what sense would that make?

Hey guys,

Daniel here, editor of www.treknews.de - we've reported about this poster today (which started this thread) .

http://www.treknews.de/treknews/newspro-treknews/static/145026064411248.php

As of 3:30pm the person responsible for the content on www.startrek.de has confirmed the official nature of the poster and title towards me.

While I have huge doubts myself I cannot ignore that official response from startrek.de personnel - any thoughts?

I think you need to do a little more research. There is also a reason journalists look for 2 independent sources for confirmation. This picture was on reddit before it was even on that German site. It's now been a month and it hasn't appeared at StarTrek.com or CBS.com. Does that really pass the smell test to you? Would CBS give a German site a 1 month exclusive on news like that? Or is it more likely that the social media editor of a German site was fooled by a fanmade graphic? Remember Occam's razor.

lol hold your horses. the same person from startrek.de that confirmed the validity just a few hours ago emailed me and told me "oh, you're right. not official."

so much for your trust in an official star trek website :(

Please consider that if you're getting your info from an official website for a specific franchise that there's no higher institution than that. Or would you also doubt the press release on the new series that startrek.com published? That'd be the same logic.

It's not uncommon that press material is being distributed WAY before its eventually being released. While it is true that it would be highly unlikely that a local office would get exclusive news like that I initially suspected a simple error in communications and the information was published way before it was supposed to be published.

That's why we've asked for a confirmation. Which we've got.

Not from a tiny social media editor btw but from the CEO that runs the company behind startrek.de.

The same guy that about an hour later wrote me "oh sorry, you're right, not official".

As an editor for a news magazine I cannot verify this kind of information with "two independant sources" because usually this information comes via press release or a posting (like this) on a official website. Simply arguing that this picture was online on forums and image boards does not say anthing as stuff gets leaked nowadays all the time.

This is why you wait for a posting on an official website to begin with.

It simply isn't a good poster. It's not even a bad modern poster.

It's a good poster for a show that was going to debut in 1987, but not for today. CBS would never had released that - esp. to the German site. No offense to the Germans.

I would've looked for other sites to confirm, or that CBS had issued a press release on the subject. Or, at least, confirm that the story came from someone related to the production.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure why anyone would think this poster is legit, considering its amateurish quality and the fact that it has the Enterprise-E with what looks like a third nacelle on top. Apparently photoshopping the CBS logo is analogous to Clark Kent's glasses...it fools everyone!

Huh? So you're telling me Clark Kent is Superman? NO WAY!!

:rommie:

As I've said: press material is sometimes being distributed way before any official release to the local offices. especially if a localization is needed. Since the error went uncorrected for over three weeks my only conclusion was that somehow someone uploaded the title and poster by mistake.

^Oh, I wasn't trying to single anyone out. I was just making a random statement about how people could be fooled by such an amateurish photoshop.
