1. SITH. 2. NEW HOPE. Sith is just so crammed pack full of goodness I can watch it over and over. Meanwhile TPM and AOTC aren't aging as well. New Hope I can always enjoy, while ESB has a great first third but the rest is tiresome for me.

The best two are:

1. Ewok Adventure: Caravan of Courage (Is this before or after ROTJ? I say before because...)
2. The Battle for Endor (like the Battle for Algiers but more violent and with Wilford Brimley. We learn why Ewoks became xenophobic and eat their enemies. Also, Wicket, that li'l shit could speak and understand basic the whole time in ROTJ.)

Actually,

1. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
2. STAR WARS (A New Bob "Thanks for all the Memories" Hope)

ESB has less 70's style to it...I dunno, it seems like the crisper, more polished movie of the 3. The lack of gratutious aliens helps a lot, even though as a kid I liked gratutious aliens.

The Empire strikes back because of:

- the entire tone of the film
- Yoda and his wisdom
- "I love you" - "I know.."

Revenge of the Sith

- Order 66 (the scenes broke my heart)
- the action choreography (the final duel Darth Vader/Obi Wan is just amazin)
- the scene where Obi Wan and Anakin see each other for the last time before Anakin turns.. you know what will happen (especially when you've already seen the movie) but underneath it carries so many tones

#1 - Revenge of the Sith - For all its issues and problems (and boy does it have problems and issues), this is still my favorite Star Wars film. The emotional journey of the film is something that I really enjoy. Obi-Wan's world-shattering, "I'm so sorry," where he seems to be apologizing for so many things all at once, is (to me at least) just gripping. Admittedly, my enjoyment is almost purely irrational -- it's almost impossible to defend the film from the many valid criticisms.

#2 - The Empire Strikes Back - For all the reasons people usually for why this is the best Star Wars film. It really is the best Star Wars film in terms of story, character development, production, dialogue, and so forth. Plus, it's one hell of a ride.

Those happen to be my 2 favorite SW movies too! I think that the reason that I like those two the best is that they are darker and more impactful in terms of their respective storylines, ROTS especially. I like all of the other movies, particularly Jedi (which has always seemed unfairly maligned) but none of them quite match the emotional intensity of ESB and ROTS

The first two, A New Hope and Empire. Return of the Jedi was ok, but was certainly weaker than the previous two.. And the best of the prequels, Revenge of the Sith, isn't even as good as RotJ.

And the Clone Wars movie... eh. I don't even group it with the previous six. It's something completely different (it was originally just a few episodes from the show that they decided to cobble together to show in theaters). It wasn't all that good, anyway.

My favorite Star Wars film is A New Hope. I like the '70s, retro atmosphere. Leia is young and sexy. The scenes that involve Tarkin are captivating.

My second-favorite is the Empire Strikes Back. It is a believable continuation of ANH. However, I prefer the uplifting tone of the first movie.

Putting aside more-objective ideas of quality, my current personal favorites are The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. As flawed as the latter was, it has the most subtext/political allegory and foreshadowing. The other two OT films are too slow and simple (I think people have a tendency to forget how much screentime the droids had in SW and attribute Luke and Han's Empire depth to the first film; it is pretty driven by effects which hold up somewhat well but not well enough to drive a film) and the other two PT films are too slow, stiffly acted and effects-driven.

Nope. It's just a better film than the PT "movies." That's why an entire franchise could be built on it; the soggy, effects-burdened PT would never have gotten off the ground without Lucas's fortune and decades of advance publicity.

That's of course completely conjectural. It's hard to imagine a world where Star Wars never existed until the release of The Phantom Menace. For all its flaws, there's nothing quite like it outside of other Star Wars films. Despite the film's many shortcomings, the level of visual imagination displayed on screen is infectious. I'd say that had it been released as a standalone movie in 1999, it would have made quite an impression.

* - I mean Star Wars. The one that came out in 1977, which I saw at least a dozen times over my summer vaction that year. I refuse to call it "Chapter IV" or "A New Hope" or whatever other idiotic title they've appended it with this week. Oh, and HAN SHOT FIRST!

Empire then Star Wars (it'll never be a new hope to me!) These two are by far the best of the bunch. Star Wars for the simplicity of taking an age old story and plonking it into space. Empire for the complexity of taking those simple story conventions and turning them on their head (the big battle's at the start, the hero loses etc).

I've always found it interesting that the best SW film is the one Lucas seemingly had the least control over.

agreed...I prefer EMPIRE to STAR WARS, but in any order, they are the best two...
