Of Kirk-Fu & other martial arts

When I first saw Kirk drop kick Finnegan little did I know it was my first step into a larger martial arts world. I was impressed that he was using kicks & chops (NOBODY did that back then), so when the show Kung Fu came along- I was primed! Then I took Okinawa Kempo Karate, later Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Jeet Kune Do, Praying Mantis, and ultimately, my personal favourite, Wing Chun.:techman:

Like the guy said in Enter The Dragon, "Whach your schtyle?"
And how much did TOS, or ANY Trek, influence your decision to study?

Green Hornet with Bruce Lee was about the same time. Before that? Good question. Martial arts were not an unknown quantity particularly during & after WW 2. I'd agree Shat was a pioneer.

ABC brought The Green Hornet to television in 1966-67, an adaptation which introduced martial arts master Bruce Lee to American audiences as Kato

Mainly what US types call AEMMA - swords, medieval... And I'm studying/training for my next dan grading in taekwondo

Dabbled a bit in Aikido, jiu-jitsu, and some other stuff

None whatsoever - I've alwas found Kirk's flying kicks particularly daft!

I've been practicing jujutsu for about 10 years, mostly from the traditional Hontai Yoshin Ryu school, but I dabbled also in the so-called "Bianchi's method" and some other Italian-inspired variations. I did a bit of cross-training in judo and aikido, to improve my understanding of some principles and techniques.

In last years I also took an interest in weapons fighting (as part of Hontai Yoshin Ruy training), as bojutsu (long staff), hanbojutsu (half-staff), kodachi do (short shord) and iai do (long sword).

I'm sad to say that Star Trak didn't had any active part in my choice of training. On the other hand, the Vulcan neck pinch is a great way to get a submission win! :D

Kirk-Fu. Love it. :D
I'm practiced in Tae Kwon Do, but I honestly can't say that Trek influenced the decision. I wonder what would happen if I used the patented hand-chop-to-shoulder move on an opponent?

I'll bet my hand would hurt.

Kirk was the master of what I call the 'wrecking ball' style of martial arts - like when he'd run toward three guys standing side by side, jump, and turn sideways in the air, knocking down all three. Or in A Taste of Armageddon when he takes out 3 or 4 guys by just running at them and knocking them down like dominoes before grabbing one of their weapons. :)

You gotta admit, it's hard to imagine a better way to take on multiple opponents. Just charge like an angry bull!

I liked Kirk chopping down Plasus in the transporter room. Bring back the Chop! Even in the alternaverse, there are bound to be many more high advisers, mad psychologists, bratty kids, vicious lizards, genetic supermen and uppity gods in need of a good chopping. :

Hair pulling one of those "not taught by most traditional schools" techniques that works pretty well,( & ask Eric Paulsen or Kimo), even for takedowns. Inside thigh pinch loads of fun as well.

Didn't James West throw in the occasional martial art move in The Wild Wild West?

The bar fight in The Trouble With Tribbles highly influenced mine. Remember when Chekov fiercely attacks a Klingon several times his size, only to have the Klingon stand there and aborb it all, then throw him across the room? That's pretty much my style. I simply grew tall and got strong, and I let that do most of the work for me.

Like Andre The Giant said in The Princess Bride - "Its not my fault being the biggest and the strongest. I don't even exercise!"

Size matters. Don't let anyone fool you. The ability to absorb punishment always goes to the bigger man. Having said that, very few to none have ever been successful in MMA that weighed over 250 lbs. Severn may have gone past that number occasionally, I dunno how much Semmy Schilt weighs, but Fedor is 230 & VERY coordinated. This new cat Brock Lesnar is perhaps an exception to the rule, but he's a freak so to speak. Most of the real Huge guys don't do very well. Yarborough, Akebono & so on. Agility goes downhill at a certain point.

True, very true. However, you can cancel out any lack of agility with the ability to get and maintain an overpowering hold through strength and leverage.

Well stated. It also applies elsewhere...but we wont go into that.

On another note that most around here seem to be missing. Some are lovers, some are fighters. Most are neither. Truth is, Kirk was BOTH lover and fighter. :bolian:

In my experience in taekwondo and elsewhere, what really makes the difference is who can block. Or dodge.

I'm 40, and I go to gradings where there are 19-20s type folks, younger, fitter, faster... and I win, because none of them can block. They just go in swinging and tire themselves out...
