"Of Bugs and Men: A Star Trek Fan Production"

Admiral Archer

So I have had this idea in my head for years, initially wanting to do it as a live action short film with a new ship and crew, then I went through a TNG action figure based film concept, before settling on this. It's a lot better than I was hoping it would be, but it is nothing special or to write home about. Still, I figured there needed to be more activity in the fan film community, so I uploaded my video to youtube, and decided to share it with all y'all. :) Hope you guys have as much fun watching as I had making this video!

Reminds me a bit of "Star Trek: The Mego Generation" when Kirk is court-martialled for his um...some subject I don't feel comfortable talking about here.

Well glad to see you're back at it.

A few suggestions if you do another...

  • Move the figures around more and take more photos so it feels less static
  • Find a way to prop up the figures so they're not slumping in their chairs, and put their hands on the consoles
  • Don't use the same background for subsequent shots. Starting at 8 mins every time you cut to Kirk and Sulu or either one it's the same exact background, so it feels like the characters are popping in and out

I agree with everything you just said! The Kirk and Sulu shots you mentioned were probably me just getting lazy. I have a tendency to want to get a project done quickly because I get excited about wanting to see the final product, so sometimes I cut corners. About the figures in their chairs, there is very little I can do to keep them from slumping over, as you say. Playmates always built their figures in such a way that they couldn't really sit down, they more lounged about. It was the way the hip articulation was done, and it has aggravated collectors like myself for years. If I try to prop them up any more, they topple over because by that point they aren't sitting so much as hovering over the chairs, balanced on their backs. If I had a Diamond Select crew, I'd film with them instead, as they at least will sit up. Gotta work with what I got though! :)
